Im just curious, my niece is coming up on drivers permit age and her parents are hyping her up on it. I keep wondering how much money insurance will be for someone her age.

I know state/insurance company/history/etc all play a major factor. Im just looking for a ballpark figure, so I can say 'I told you so'.

AT LEAST 110/month for basic liability and a cheap car. I believe it will be lowest with an auto, 4 door car.

I have a perfect record and my insurance was about 100/month 6 years ago for a 5 spd 2 door coupe. Girls have higher insurance rates, though.

It told that was true everywhere? There is no denying that young male drivers are the most dangerous demographic when behind the wheel.

And be thankful you're not in England - $300 per month is the cheapest I could find for a policy that lets me drive the Supra .

I was told you are not aloud to have rate differences between gender... as it is discrimination.

When I was 16 with my SAAB 9000 turbo 5 door. My insurance was $120 a month. No ABS and no good student or any of that crap.

Thanks guys, thats about what I was expecting. I think it will come down to if she drives their SUV with full coverage or they buy her a junker with just liability.

Now that's a lot to pay for a month.
If I'd have the car on my name and would do the insurance on my name it'd be about 1k a year (for the Supe). But it's on my fathers name, so we pay about 200 a year IIRC. That's for the liability you have I guess.

Adjuster is probably the only person on this forum qualified to answer this.

There are a ton of variables involved.

Where you live, what other cars are at the house, etc....

For example, most insurance companies consider that all drivers in a household have equal access to all vehicles. You can't say "Well my daughter isn't allowed to drive the Corvette, she only drives the Civic" and have it not count. The kid is going to be listed as a driver regardless.

I've got 3 adult kids at this point, I've been through it.

Yea I just wanted a ball park, I know the variables change it so much. Her parents seem to think its going to be dirt cheap because they have a clean record. Anything Near $100 a month is going to be a huge shocker to all of them.

When I was young my mom wouldnt let me get a license because her insurance would go way up. We went to talk to her agent and he said it didnt matter if I intended to drive her car or not, her coverage would go up.

I like my insurance now with progressive, the cost just got cut in half for me out of no where.

Ya, that makes sense, but I keep hearing gender plays into your rate? If I were to judge based on my limited experience I'd say girls should pay more. :D 3 of my 4 good female friends in high school totalled at least one car. None of my male friends (10 or so) got an accident or even a ticket until they were 18 or 19 and none have totaled a car. :dunno: (I realize my experience doesn't represent anything significant, just thought I'd share.)

Driver's ed classes and good grades saved me around 25-50/month IIRC, but that will vary significantly from provider to provider.

Waiting for Adjuster's input...

In Florida its a matter of where the drivers reside. The rates go up for all regardless of the vehicle she says she is going to drive.
My parents taught me a good lesson when I was ready to drive. They did not pay for my insurance. They made me work for it till I had the money to cover the extra charge for putting me on the coverage. It took me a year to work for the money and I had to keep paying my father the premiums as they came along. My mom and dad made the extra effort to drive me to my part time jobs until I earned all the money to get insured. It made me a lot more responsible when it came to driving. I knew what it was costing me to drive and what it could cost me if I was a irresponsible driver.

It's not discrimination if they're proven to be more of a liability. If they weren't allowed to do that, then they'd have to have the same rates across the board for under 25/over 25, single/married, etc. Generally, girls have lower insurance rates, even though it seems they're usually the worst drivers...but it's all based on statistics and demographics.

Thats not how my agent does it... my brother and I were listed on the cheapest vehicles when we were 16 and it made a HUGE difference in price per month. (me on a 4 cyl ranger and him on a Cavy). Our insurance agent loves us though, he listed my dad for my 600rr and the rate was cut in half.

maybe its a difference bewteen companies?

tell them to buy her an old truck. gas mileage is sucky, but make her work and pay her own gas. I was 17 at this point, not 16, but when I bought my '79 F-150, the extra premium for adding the truck to my mom's acct was like 75$/6 Months (liability only).

Other reason for a truck is that if she gets in a wreck with another car, truck wins and car loses.

Thats how we did it. I was listed as the primary driver of a 71 beetle. My dad was moved to the saab, otherwise it would have been a bit more.

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
