and at 14psi? What about the upgraded ct's i have read and heard 17-18psi on the pump gas.... what do you think?

i still think it's dangerous. an upgraded CT won't blow as much heat at elevated boost levels. and the stock intercooler isn't THAT great. if you put in a more efficient IC, i'd say you could safely push 15psi on the stock CT.

i was boosting 15psi on my stock CT through the stock intake/IC system. i don't recommend it, though.

why dont you recommend it,
I thought our ic system was good for like 300+ hp

it is good for that much, but why stick with a stocker when u can pay for a new intercooler for like 170+ $ (ebay, driftmotion, etc) when it cools and does 10X's better than the stock IC.

when u up the boost u need a better IC

if you stil have your restrictive intake and exhaust, adding other stuff wont matter.there IS a procedure as far as performance add-on's and what their gains might produce.
just dont do things ass-backwards

The issue is not with the material of the gasket its more an issue of the correct air/fuel ratio and timing ...... detno melts everything even forged internals.

I've got an 87 Turbo that I'm reassembling. Divorced downpipe (no cat), 3 inch exhaust, stock intake (for now), planning on IC and 2.5" piping. My turbo is on the way to PT, but I haven't decided what to have done to it yet. Suggestions? I hear 57 trim is the most popular? And when I get it back how much boost should I run? 124k miles, stock gasket torqued to 75ftlbs.

Small correction, Detonation doesn't "melt" parts that happens due to a lean condition.

Detonation usually hammers parts to death, 1st to go is the stock HG, fit a MHG and next will be the ring lands on the stock cast pistons, fit forged pistons and it'll hammer the big end bearings causing rod knock and eventually breaking a rod and killing the block.

Moral to all this is Detonation is BAD Mmmkay ;)

Sounds like another good reason to use composite or stock HG on slightly modded cars instead of MHGs. Slightly modded = Intake & turbo back 3" exhaust. Repairing a HG would be less expensive than, rings, piston or bearings.

As far as there being no difference between 6 and 10 psi, lol a car i got had a 3inch downpipe well 3" pipe welded to the flex section of a stock elbow and fill welded just before cat. This was a large improvement for what little was done.
There is way too much credit given to mhg if you run a felpro and arps you will be fine for more hp than most ppl here push. Ive seen many 4 and 6 cyl racing engines with 500+ hp with felpros and arps. Its just that the stock bolts stretch under stress to much and let the head go. Most of the time we just put a mhg and say that fixed it without realizing the studs importance here.
I keep seeing things like this happening, for instance Joe goes and lowers his car now has -1 deg camber instead of -.2. His tires wear on the inside edges. A tech tells him he needs to put a camber kit on the car to fix camber to spec. Well low and behold its fixed, the camber kit fixed the problem so Joe tells all his friends to buy a camber kit when they lower their cars. But what Joe and the alignment tech dont realize is the tire wear was fixed because they did an alignment after the camber kit was installed, if they just set the toe it would have stopped the wear too.
Sorry this is so long I just keep seeing people not thinking things through

stock is 6.8 psi. 10 psi with no other mods (intake/exhaust) is asking for trouble. you are pushing things too hard with too much restriction on the components. i suggest taking off the boost controller until after you get caught up mod wise.

Japanese auto manufacturers were always super conservative with boost levels at about 6.7 like the Z31 300ZX Turbo (exception being the late 88/89 Starion/Conquest at 10.5 PSI stock).
