AS I get more involved with this whole building issue I begin to forget what mmy goal is. I want a low 10 sec car. What kind of horsepower does the community think I need to reach this goal:naughty:

No offense, but this isn't just Fast and Furious where all you need to make the car a 10 seconder is by painting it orange and slapping stickers on it. ;)

I come from a land down under
Guys he's asked a serious question, it deserves some serious answers.

I have NFI how much power it takes to put a Mk3 into the 10's as I'm not a drag racer so am hoping someone that knows will contribute their knowledge.

5sp or auto?

The only low 10 sec mkiii's I know of are 5sp with around 800whp. I'm sure you could do it with less, but it all depends on how much weight you can pull out, and how well you can drive. I couldn't tell you for an auto, but I'm sure there are alot of variables there too.

edit: According to this friendly horsepower calculator at a weight of 3600lbs with driver you'd only need 670whp to pull a 10.2, but you'd probably also need a setup like Slow66 is gonna have to pull it off, much like Grimjack said.

I'll have to agree with Brent on this subject. A high stall, a good auto tranny, smart spending money under the hood and some slicks and that would be a good start. For being automatic, you have to look at the factory that when it shifts, it's still holding that boost as opposed to a manual where you might lose a little bit in between shifts. Just my .02...I'm curious as to what some other people would have to say as well...

I wasn't sure exactly "how" accurate this was, but I entered in 5 of my friends cars weights and dyno'd horsepower and the estimate of 4 out of 5 of them was almost dead on. Coincidence? Maybe...but obviously, if no driver error takes place and everything acts as it should, I'm sure it is a pretty good idea.

If you'll check back to my first post, I linked a calculator that allows you to input vehicle weight (w/ driver) and your desired e.t. to get a horsepower estimate. You get the same numbers either way.

A low 10 sec car in a standard will take around 800 as mentioned. I will show you next year what it takes to go further ;)

I thought I read a thread where you said you was'nt going to go any further Duane. I have already spent a good bit of $$$$$$ on the setup I have know but less say I made a bobo so back to the building board. I originally wanted to build for 800 but I don't know if I want to spend all that cash. And I have a 5 sp.

oh man i am so excited about this post. i have my physics 101 final in 2 weeks so i am totally gonna be a smartass right now: Xo= x subscript o, your starting position. Vo= your starting speed(zero in this case).

distance is given by x(t)=Xo+VoT+.5aT^2
1/4mile=1320ft=402.336m

using this equation we solve for a(acceleration)

402.336= 0+0(10sec)+.5a(10sec^2)
we get a= 8.04672m/sec^2

this is the AVERAGE rate of acceleration you must maintain to run a 10 sec 1/4 mile.

so we then use that acceleration to find the force applied over the 1/4 mile.
i am using 3500lbs as the weight of an average mkiii. 3500lbs=1587.56kg

F=MA

F=(1587.56kg)(8.04672m/sec^2)= 12,774.6508 newtons

use that force to find work

w=FD

w=(12774.6508N)(402.336m)= 5139701.906 Jouels

convreted to horsepower/hour divided by 264000. that is 1.914xxxx horsepower per hour. multiply by 3600 seconds in one hour and then divide by 10 and i get a grand total of

689.245hp

that is of course with perfect traction, perfect linear acceleration, no wind resistance, no drivetrain loss. that is, it is impossible to run a 10 second with anything less than 689.245hp. i think in real life 800 is alot more resonable.

sorry, i just had to practice my physics. wish me luck on the final, just 2 weeks away!

i find it funny that an f-body can run 10's with less than 500rwhp. it's all in the setup. shit i ran mid 12's with 290rwhp on my camaro.

people need to invest in a drag setup.
