People who have lapped their blocks...

I have the plate from McMaster, the one I think you, 3p141592654, recommended in another post. I using grade 6 diamond paste and just moving the plate in a figure 8 motion, trying not to apply pressure, just moving it around. I started with the smooth side because I just wanted to clean up the...

People who have lapped their blocks...

It's hard to tell but what's done on my block looks like IJ's. It's just that it isn't coming up evenly. Should I keep lapping or just go get this thing resurfaced and possibly start over with the lapping? As for the pins, one I carefully pulled out with a pair of vise grips. The other...

People who have lapped their blocks...

Here is my block after about an hour. Here's a closeup. I figured since the block was machined flat, the machine marks should come up evenly. Obviously, they are not. But if you notice, there does seem to be a pattern to the machine marks still visible. This pattern repeats...

    Some General Rebuild Questions

Ok. I'm having new bushings pressed in. I'm thinking I will try to tackle the crank plugs this weekend. Any thoughts on the grade of paste? I figure a 6 should be good. I'll look for some CRC whatnot or something similar. Thanks. Now if my intake valves on my newly rebuilt head were...

    Some General Rebuild Questions

Or not so general. I've searched but haven't got quite as detailed answers as I would like. I'm in the middle of a rebuild with Ross Pistons, ARP hardware, Cometic HG, etc. I'm shooting for 400whp. 1. How important are new rod bushings? I'm using stock rods and the machine shop checked...

Ross Piston Clearance without Torque Plate

Thanks everyone. As my last resort for a torque plate fell through, I was left with no other option but to continue without one. I just dropped off the pistons at the machine shop with strict orders for 5 thousands clearance. Came home, made a drink and crossed my fingers.

Ross Piston Clearance without Torque Plate

spoolint78: 4 thousandths coated and no problem. And this was without a torque plate?

Ross Piston Clearance without Torque Plate

Would you run 4 thousandths even if you hadn't used a plate?

Ross Piston Clearance without Torque Plate

So with Ross's, I can pretty much expect some slap no matter what. What's the worst thing that can happen not using a plate? Just more slap?

Ross Piston Clearance without Torque Plate

All right. First post. Lets dive right in. I'm in the middle of a rebuild using Ross pistons. I can not find a machine shop near me that has a torque plate, so short of having one made, I'm going to have to have the block bored and honed without one. Ross recommends the piston clearance to...
