It really depends how chipped up the old chrome is, and if you want to sand it.
The best way is to media blast it and start fresh, like the nooB said.:)

I've had a 1981 928, a 1985 911 (just like ViR2 has,;)), a 1992 C4 911, and a few 914's.
A properly built 914 is tough to beat.:)

FYI, gun settings are different for primer(thick) and color and clear (thinner.) If you have enough clear on, wet sanding will help the orange peel a lot, but it's a ton of work.

I would find out what the final gearing change will be, and go from there if you like it. If you don't, add in an LSD with the right gears to all the posts above, on your budget.
