Correct me if I'm wrong but the only time you would need to swap out the drive-shaft is if you use a different transmission. Assuming you're using a W58 or 154 transmission you can still use the drive-shaft. You can get a one piece aluminum drive-shaft from shaftmasters.com

No it's not normal lol.. It's actually quite interesting. Never seen this, but have heard of it before. You did mention that it is running rich. Have you tried taking it for a spin right on cranking it up and if so has it done it again?
