Hi,

Im having some problem with my supra 88 7mgte and I cant quit figure this out.........

Problem # 1 : My car dosnt seem to wanna start when I turn ignition on - I have to Hold the key on for sometimes 15-20 sec before it turns over?

Problem # 2 : I could live with problem #1 but lately the car dosnt start at all? Its usually after it has been driven for several hours on a day and then the day after NOTHING ?? Its not clicking but its sometimes sounds like a Hissing/whistle noise from the starter side of the engine???

Then when it finally do start I have alot of white smoke and a strong smell of gas coming from the rear(of the car:naughty:)?

Thought maybe someone had a simillar problem:)

Thanks for any help

~Marlon~

hmmmm nope never. but im gona go on a limb and say possible bad ignition switch? but im prolly wrong..

can you verify weather or not your motor turn's over while you have this no start situation?

can you verify the tach move's while cranking? "it should bounce"

if you just hear a click, replace the starter contact's or the starter it's self...

Hi Guys

1. engine DOES NOT turn over.
2. The rpm tach DO bounce
3. Theres NO clicking from the starter

Could it perhabs be a siezed starter relay?

4. I hear the hissing from the engine when I hold the key ON IGN
I dont smell gas unless it cranks over and in which case it usually starts:)

I've had this problem in the wife's car what seems like many times.

1st thing I would do is to have the battery tested. (KISS) I've had everything "seem" to work, lights, horn, stereo, etc, only to find out it was a battery gone bad. If you have to, remove it and take to the parts store for testing. (Checking it with a volt meter isn't good enough)

2nd, I'm guessing that it is possible for the starter actually go bad after a battery fails because I've changed the stater, it worked for a few days, then the same problem came back. Changed the deffective battery and everything worked for a day or two. Then I changed the starter again, and so far this is longest it's lasted in quite some time...

I've changed out ignitions switches, nuetral safety swithces and in the end I think a deffective battery was the root of all my problems....

Good luck! When you first detect any hesitation from when you turn the key to when the engine cranks, get the battery tested. Because it will not get better....

Thanks for your input Scot,

Had the battery changed to a bigger and better one - for just the same reasons stated above:) It works.

When I try putting a booster on I can here the relay clicking NOT the starter but the relay????

If the engine doesn't crank the tach can't possibly move or am I missing something?

Charging or changing to a fresh battery will often "solve" a starter contact or bad wiring issue because the voltage doesn't drop as much under load. You can bet the symptom will come back though. If it does turn out to be the contact and you can't get a new one for some reason a center punch and hammer will fix it as good as new.

Ok I finally got somewhere today:)
I pulled my s... together and dropped the starter...........yeah I know:nono:

But it paid of, I placed the starter on the /- on the battery, hook up the /+ and a 12v wire and tried it out and sure enough the startergear did engage but did not turn???:aigo:

tried it a few times and only one time did the startergear turn....hmmmm

Switch it out with a working one and everythings good:)

Thanks for all the input guys
