Well I bought another 360 on CL for $20 just to tinker with, and I've done the X-clamp removal and artic silver swap. I do not want to over heat this thing like it says, I was wondering if anyone has any luck with fixing the RRoD.

I've done a ton of google searching and reading just no luck, if I can't fix it o well $20. Its just a project that I would like to fix and put linux on or do something with.

I fixed mine just before the rrod happened. Mine kept on freezing up under game play. Did the x clamp repair and new heat paste. Been fine for over 12 months since

Did you do the overheat part? I've replaced the x clamps and it has artic silver on it, but I don't want to over heat the system and damage other things.

Not sure what you mean, i took it completely apart, heat sink and cpu from memory. There is a video guide floating about on the net i used. Also used a heat gut on all the chips.

I've had the 3 rings on my 360 three times now, and it was a refurb when I bought it. Every time it does it, I just pop it open, clean the old thermal paste off with some makeup sponges (little triangle things, hold up alot better than paper wipes) and some high % isopropryl alcohol, then apply a little artic silver, spread it out with a toothpick and reseat the heatsinks.

I've seen quite a few where people get the thermal stuff on the diodes beside the dies and it can cause problems. Just remember the thermal goo/pads only go on the DIES, not on anything else, and make sure not to wiggle the heatsink before screwing it down. Also be sure not to overtighten or you can crack the die and kill the processor.

Not true anymore, they switched to the better chip that doesn't fry itself.

I had the exact same issues.

I did do the overheat thing to it, without HD and honestly it worked perfectly without any further issues ever from the system. Actually I gotta be honest it is more stable than it ever was before.

Never had any issues ever again with it and use it daily still. No subsystems are flakey and for all purposes its better than new.

Basically your overheating it and allowing MS's crappy wave soildering to rebond the ic to the circuit board. I really don't see any other easy solution for ya unfortunately. Give it a go and you'll be ok. I was paranoid of all the same problems that you have concerns about.

Yea I'm over heating the GPU right now. I've got the fan on the CPU and its nice and cool GPU is getting a bit toasty. Hopefully this will work. Waiting for 2 lights still.

This little bastard doesn't want to over heat >< The fans are hauling ass too, and I cant touch it for more than a second or two without my fingers feeling the heat.

Well it didn't over heat but it ran hot as shit for almost 45mins. The screws where barely tightened on the GPU Heatsink, so when I turned it off I tightened them snug. Now letting it cool down.

Jasper boxes: http://giftguide.toptenreviews.com/?p=2721

Also keep in mind this doesn't mean you can be a tard, I've seen people fry game systems from putting them on bookcases surrounded by books (in other words, NO AIRFLOW).

I will actually go check those systems that we have to see if they are this "jasper" chip. The point is, what kind of tards build a system with specific versions of it apparently better then others? Xbox 360's are garbage, and i would not want one if it was free.

Oh and.

It's typical with PC hardware. The first generation of a chipset is always terrible, as it matures and they reduce the size and power use (higher power use = more heat) it gets more reliable.

Was the Xbox pushed to market early? Probably as we can look at Halo and other M$ products and see that generally speaking they're pushed to market early.

I'm not to mad with it, just kinda like how the fk did microsoft fuck this up so bad. The least they could do is replace all the units, like they are doing with vista.
