I am just wondering what these two connections are and what exactly they do.

The first two pictures are a plug that was cracked during the headgasket change. It connects two pieces of vaccume line under the intake manifold.

The second two pictures, I just noticed while i was taking a picture of the first plug. The only thing i could think of that would be missing in that general area was the cruise control, which i removed... ?

thanks,
chris

First two pics are the fuel pressure regulator vsv, you definitely want to fix that.

The second plug might be the reverse light switch or neutral start or something like that from the transmission.

ha that plug has been dead for over a year now with the car running strong. So just out of curiousity... how the f does it work exactly? From what i understand the only side effect to the fuel vsv "bypass" is lower gas mileage and harder cold starts. Every morning it takes me two tries to get the car started... The car will crank without catching for one or 2 seconds, then starts right up on the second try.

The guy i was working with at the time said something along the lines of, oh that's not important. After doing that whole job over a weekend I caved and said "f-it". Maybe Irresponsible on my part, but he was a toyota tech and mk3 junky, so i took his word. Then i pretty much just forgot about it until a few days ago when i saw it under the hood.

oh... and I can't find a connection anywhere for that second plug.

AFAIK, Fuel VSV is for hot starts to combatr heat soak, so if your car starts fine w/o it when hot then you are good to go. I don't have mine on there either

the 2nd plug does go to the transmission.

mine has a red wire, and a yellow wire. there is a sensor near the back of the trans.

slide under your car, and look for a connection that is danglin. i believe its on the passenger side of the trans... but im not for sure

You are correct. On warm starts, this switches from manifold pressure to atmospheric pressure for the fuel pressure regulator signal to combat heat soak.

How do you people go about getting rid of the CEL when you remove EGR?
