this is a thread for words that have interesting/strange/funny origins post the word, and the origin. blah blah blah you know it all...

I'll start with 'sincere'

came from the Latin words "without wax" because back in the day a lot of old potters and such would screw up, when making water jugs and pots out of clay, so when they fired the pottery, it would crack. instead of throwing away the poorly made container, they would just shove wax in the crack, and blend it in with glaze. well, whenever someone would cook or use the waxed containers, the wax would melt, pouring the contents out, and creating a pissed off customer. SO, in order to get more business, and ensure that they were trustworthy when it came to the quality of their pots, some shops would hang a sign marked "cine cere"(not sure on the spelling, so I spelled phonetically) in front of their shops, meaning 'without wax'. and it soon became a common phrase for someone or some act which was trustworthy, and had good intentions, and so was derived the word 'sincere'
