Woodpecker sound only under boost after replacing the Heater Core

Hi all!

I have this woodpecker knocking type sound just as the car starts to boost then it goes away. (well it might not go away; but, it can no longer be heard because of exhaust and engine noise) It can be reproduced every time and the sound is identical every time. It is coming from the passenger side of the car and almost sounds like it's just under the dash...?

This comes after reinstalling the dash and all associated parts related to a heater core replacement.

I don't know if this is note worthy; but, some of my EBC settings are set back to default and when the car hits 11 psi, it doesn't hold and drops off rapidly. So I need to retune. Could this be some sort of wastegate noise that I'm hearing?

Thanks...

sounds like it could be stepper motor noise from the ebc...power the ebc off and see if the noise remains.

Maybe so but some use steppers for better control.

I was just acknowledging that mine uses a solenoid.

Could it be wastegate chatter then? Conceivable since boost isn't holding...?

Thanks Adam. I'll try that.

All bolts are spoken for; but, something may be loose. I rounded up a co-pilot to ride with me after work to see if we can pinpoint it.

I find it weird that it only happens under boost...

Exhaust leak...

Negative on an exhaust leak. I just retorqued the exhaust bolts and no exhaust leak is evident when rev'd in neutral.

My copilot confirmed that it is coming from behind the dash on the passenger side. That is the side that my vacum lines for my EBC are coming in on. Could one of those in-line vacum filters be bad and make that type of noise?

Disconnect the boost controller entirely and see if it goes away...

I'm still saying exhaust leak as exhaust leaks don't usually show themsleves until under load...

Like I said...the ones I know about. The stepper motor type is not common as a boost controller, but it is more accurate...that's why a stepper is used in the ISCV. In this case, the OP has already stated he has the solenoid type.

Yeah, I know the OP said that .. but if you look at my last post [and follow the link/pdf] you'll see that it mentions the "clicking" sound for the boost controller that is listed in his signature. =p Now im not sure if the Profec B Spec II uses a stepper motor or not. But I used to have a Profec B [not the spec II] and its solenoid didn't make the clicking noise, I later changed to a Profec B Spec II solenoid and it would make the clicking noise as stated in the manual.

Steven...you da man! Thanks for the link and the insight! That's gotta be it because the car ran fine when I parked it to replace my Heater Core.

I do still have the dash mostly apart so I will disable the EBC just to confirm.

I will post my findings so we can all sleep at night. ;)

Thanks everyone! :)

Confirmed! The woodpecker noise is the solenoid.

I can now finish re-assembling the dash and Grimreaper can sleep now! :icon_bigg

BTW: I smoked a DSM at lunch today...3 times!!! :biglaugh:
