Wobbly/Loose door?

The driver's side door of this supra im looking to buy is kind of weird. When you open it, it hangs low, and doesnt really close unless you slam it kind of hard. There's a bit of play when it's open, and you can move it up and down. The passenger door is fine, though.


What are some possible causes for this? Just a loose door hinge thing?

Would it be the byproduct of anything serious?

Only way to fix is to buy new hinges...around $60 IIRC. I'm pretty sure you have to remove the fender to replace them.

You know a good place to buy them? My drivers door is sagging as well

Guys,

I had to pull my inner fender liners this weekend to run some wiring into the cabin. It looks there is enough room to remove and replace the door hinges without taking off the fender. You'd need a long extension for the door bolts and a ratcheting wrench for the hinge to body bolts. The top hinge to door bolt is questionable. It looks like it would have to be loosened and or removed while the door is open. On a side note, there is a big wire grommet behind the inner fender liners, which is a great place to pass wiring into the cabin from the engine compartment. I ran my EDFC harness through both drivers side and passenger side and it came out very clean and well protected. No need to drill additional holes in the firewall or try and squeeze wires through the smaller grommet holes in the engine compartment.

Ok, so I did this today. You don't need to pull the fender. A few bolts off it, but that's it. 90 minute job from start to finish.

Jack up the car, pull off the wheel, remove the plastic wheel well liner, support the door on a jack, use a ratcheting wrench to pull the 9 bolts. You'll need long, skinny arms and some patience.

Do one hinge at a time. The top hinge comes out towards the passenger compartment, the bottom hinge comes off towards the engine bay. Oh, and you'll have to pull 3 or 4 bolts along the top of the fender to get one of the bolts loose. When putting the bolts back in, do the fender side ones up first, and likewise, align door up/down on the fender side before aligning in/out on the door side.

My driver's side door closes like a Jaquar now, instead of a '68 Ford Pickup.

had the same problem. except someone hit my door when i was getting out of the car.... almost killed me. anyway, i got a new door from the junkyard but used the same hinges. worked fine but the door check was broken from the accident. thats what let to the eventual sagging of my door. the lower hinge eventually went. wasnt too bad to install a new hinge but i recommend getting a new door check if yours is broken or on its way out.
