Will a newer climate control work with older Supras?

Just wondering.. I have an '88 and have noticed that newer Supras (not sure if it was 89 that it changed, I'll assume it was since many things changed that year) have a cooler looking climate control, with buttons that don't get worn out like mine does (and everyone else's with this climate control). Funny thing is, I have two of this, in perfect working condition, heh... but I want that new one just because it looks so good.

Anyways, is it just Plug and Play? Say, one from a 90-92 to my 88?

Plug and play. I have one in my 87(just got it last week).

Took all of 15 minutes to install with a phillips screwdriver.

The foot/defrost setting doesn't work, but all other settings work fine.

Foot/defrost? What is that? It doesn't work because it's damaged in YOUR particular unit, or because it just wont work on pre 89 cars?

I live in the caribbean bro, I have NEVER had to use the "defrost" option in any car. ;-) Hehehe.

Foot/Defrost wasn't an option on pre-89's, it was added on 89+ models.

My question to you, do you guys have the digital climate control, or the sliders?

Here's my 88 with 89+ controller:

WOW! That is a SWWWWWEEEEEEET looking interior, Mr. Administrator.

I will order a climate control as soon as I find one. I shall also get one of those clusters! The stock 88 ones age the car, IMO. THat one looks so much better! Plus mine has a small crack (not noticeable though, heh), AND the clock isn't working (the buttons don't work, but the clock shows the time and everything.. I have to unplug/plug the battery at 1:00pm one day and then it works fine).. lol, so, as you see, I have no real reason to get one, but it looks NICE! I want one!!! :)

What steering wheel is that? I got a Momo Adapter and a cheap wheel, it looks nice, but I lost my cruise control (whidh I don't mind AT ALL), BUT, I also lost the automatic-return of my turn signal lamps. So after I've made the turn, I have to manually get them off, and I absolutely HATE that. :(

That's the stock 89 Supra wheel, in 90 they went to airbags.

In the USA. We didn't get the airbag until 92 in Canada, and in the rest of the world they never got it.

As for my cluster, it's an 89+ cluster for the most part, I've got the 88 temp gauge face (89+ needle), and I've got the USA PSI gauges on the right. I've got a Canadian fuel gauge waiting to go in (doesn't say "UNLEADED FUEL ONLY" on it).

I've also got a Super Monitor in there.

Hi, sorry to resurrect this old thread I found while looking for something...
How sure are you about the '92 airbags? I have a '90 with driver's airbag, and the warranty card and so on says the car was originally sold in Vancouver.

About 99% sure. According to any and all documentation on the subject and every car I've seen, no airbags on pre-92 models. Someone might have put the airbag steering wheel onto a car not equipped with the rest of the stuff though.

As for you marlonvip, this thread really mainly applies to North American Supras. Did you try to put in a newer Denmark control, or a USA/Canada control?

I'll have to take another look at the owners manual, see if there's any mention in there of airbag. Can't remember for sure.

Edit: I am wrong. Owners manual shows only US spec had SRS air bag, and the car has none of the related airbag electronics.
Jeff is the man!

Hey Jeff, I've got a question regarding the Super Monitor. Can you swap a super monitor cluster into a car that didn't have it and it work, or does the car itself also come with some added electronics that you have to have?
