I was just lookin at my NA... It blew its hg about 2 years ago in my driveway... I was goin out and just starting it and lettin it run to keep the batt goin and the oil flowin, and one day, POOF, at idle, the hg went out... *bastard* So I was thinking, I could get this thing runnin in a weekend... Then I thought, what if I pull the head and the cylinder(s) rusted up... Is it possible?

He was asking if it would rust when he pulls the head off.

Jake, if it takes you as long to do the HG as it has to do your rebuild, then the answer is yes :)

yes. The humidity in the air will get in through the valves, and the oil eventually drains away enough to give access to the formerly nicely machined surfaces.

I guess the only way to know is pull the head... But I'll be REALLY disappointed in myself if its ruined... The motor only has about 5000 miles on the rebuild... Im already mad at myself for letting her sit this long... I should never have neglected her, she was my first...

BTW: head is still on, valve covers still on, intake and exhaust manis still on...

it's possible, but it's a lot tougher if it's the complete engine in the car with everything on it...

now, engine out, no exhaust, no hood....you're looking at rust...

I've torn down a 5sfe that sat in a gutted camry with less then 100miles that was donated to my school. The car had no sheet metal left on it at all because Auto body class got ahold of it. So my class pulled the engine and such and becasue it sat open for so long, there were portions of rust on the crank and inside the block. Other then that, it was cool tearing down such a clean engine.

I don't think you'll have much of a problem. But, you never know...

I come from a land down under
Biggest danger point is the rings to bore as any oil film here is minimal and in time the rings can actually rust to the bore.

I'd be giving it a really good soak with some penetrating Oil BEFORE trying to turn it over then drain the pan refill and prime it without plugs.

I've seen cars that sat for YEARS brought back in the same way IJ said...

as long as there isn't any pitting on the cylinder walls, and the rings don't sieze, the rings will usually wear themselves in again...

You guys got me worried. My 1j has been sitting for a while. When I first got it I put a little oil in each cylinder. I got to get the valve covers and oil pan off and give everything a nice coat of oil to keep it fresh. Who knows how long it sat at the place it bought it from.

if you have the head and intake on the block, a little surface corrosion might form, but it just that, surface corrosion. You're not going to pit the cylinder walls in atmospheric conditions, and whatever corrosion there is will be wiped clean when you start the car. Change the oil after a short period of time and you will be fine.
