Sorry no Vida Gurrera pictures here.

My wife's car turns 2800 rpm at 80 miles and hour in OD. My car turns 3500 rpm at 80 mph in OD. At first I thought my overdrive wasn't working, but now I know that it is because it shifts four times. What rear end could I have in my car with those rpm's. I don't know what other rear end was offered for the 91 supra. Could it be because her's is an '89? Did they have different rearends for the different years? Just wondering if anyone knew. I probably won't lose any sleep over it, because I'm used to it by now, but it seems like I need another gear when driving on the interstate........lol

Turbo auto's got 3.91's IIRC
You can swap any rear end in, but the speedometer will be off, and being an auto, I think it will also make it shift differently because it will think it's going faster/slower than it is...

Someone must have put a 3.73 in my auto before I bought it. I bought this car from Washington (I think) and just assumed it had a stock rear end. Thanks again.

Reputataion sent.

I have an '89 Auto...it came with a 3.73 differential. I swapped it out for the 3.90 for a little more off-the-line pick-up.

It kinda sounds like you have a 4.10 or 4.30 in your '91. If a swap was done on either car, it was the '91.

Thanks Jdub and Supra90. Does anyone know if there is a way to find out what rear end I have. Is their any serial numbers on the re that I can check. I think oneandgone told me a while back that their isn't any numbers on the outside of the housing. I can't remember for sure............lol

There was no difference in autos and 5 spds.
Breaks down like this:
all n/a s = 4.30
all pre 89 turbo = 3.91
all post 89 turbo = 3.73

Yeah that's about the same as my wifes '89. She's right at 2800 if her speedo is perfect. I was just wondering what rearend I had. It doesn't really matter too much I guess, cause it runs good. Thanks for the help though..........lol

dont forget NA sport packs got 4.3 LSD's. JZA70s got 4.10 torsens and some early 89's have 3.91 LSD, while some later ones have the 3.73 LSD. I like the 3.91 LSD personally and used that on my turbo conversion. I turn 3k or maybe a shade less at 80mph

the N/A's came with 4.30 rear ends through out production if i remeber right the turbo models are different they came with two rear end's a 3.91 87-88, and a 3.73 for the rest of the mk3's life the 3.73 gave the supra an extra 20 m.p.h. in the manual transmissions and in auto's and exta 10 or 13 versus the the 87-88 model turbo cut off of 170 somthing with the 89-92 auto's having a peg out of 180 something the turbo rear ends also were bumped up from a 7.5 inch to a 8 inch diff. making it a good percentage stronger than mk2 rear end. i can't remeber if the 4.30 was only 86.5 models and sadly i don't really pay attetion to the 7M-GE scene so i don't know too much about that rear end as faras how it affected the supras performance sorry for the lecture just felt like lectureing truthfully.

Boss refer to my last post and the post before. All NAs had 4.30. Open diffs for base models and LSD's for sport packs. 7mgte turbos had 3.91 from 87-early 89. late 89-92 had 3.73. Like you said, it raised top speed, but consequently it made the car a bit slower. 1jzgte JZA70's had 4.10 torsen rear ends. Not sure what the GA70's had. I would guess a 4.10 or 4.30.

Tuff - Thanks man, I've been working to get the car configured like this for a while. The paint is rough and I need to get the trim panels swapped out, but she still turns heads! The wheels were painted 2 owners ago. I just got them this week from a MK4 NA guy in KY from SF
