This is true, but trying to find employment isn't as hard in Canada right now as aposed to the states, or at least where i live.
Its hard here. Be happy and don't bitch. I am trying to find a second job right now to help support my household.

I would hardly call it "hard" to find a job in the GTA right now. I see not hundreds; rather THOUSANDS of job openings here, so evidently it's a matter of being picky or not.

And to the OP; Can't say I blame you. A unionized subsidiary of the company I work for just voted yes on a new contract; They now have "optional" split shifts. However, that will quickly turn to "Well, tough economic times. If you want to work, this is what you'll have to do."
For ANY company to set that sort of bullshit prescedent is unacceptable in my opinion. If you want better productivity out of your employees, you treat them like people, not fucking slave labor.

I have a home (PURCHASED) and a crazy sinkhole supra project and do pretty well, Guess where i work anyone? Walmart! Its not what you make its about where you have your priorities. I don't party every weekend so i save a lot of money! It does help having an awesome housing market in Texas, 1400 square foot home with 2acre lot and a huge nice pond on an amazing lot and the house is in awesome shape for 77,000! Don't believe me check out southeast texas reality, and the funny thing is people in texas think that housing is expensive, try buying a house in washington state or in reno nevada, LOL. So keep your job and make the best of it is what i say.

I'm not pro-union by any means, but they serve a purpose in some cases.
Example; how much does say, a carpenter make where you live? Compare that to how much one makes where they're unionized(ie here) - For skilled trades, I believe they are necessary because you will ALWAYS have somebody who doesn't know how to do the RIGHT job willing to do it for less.

I don't care what the company has shifts for; You treat you employees like shit, you'll get shit in return. If my company tried to pull that, you have no idea how badly the productivity would fall...If you can sit there and somehow justify treating employees like shit, then you're a big part of the problem as far as companies doing what they want nowadays. I don't feel "lucky" to have my job. My skills are in demand around the globe and while I appreciate the employment, I can always take those skills elsewhere. Failure to approach employment with the attitude that YOU are bringing something to the table sets a terrible prescedent.

Short of fast food, there isn't much open for a 21 year old university student.

I work 14 days(or nights) straight, 12 hours a day, 2 hours travel a day.

If you got work lets just enjoy it.

I of course have 2 weeks off every 2 weeks:naughty::naughty:

I don't understand the concept of split shifts....how could such an unorganized system be better for productivity?

I work 5pm to 5am Monday threw Thursday then 5pm till 10pm Friday....day shift works 5-7am (not everyone works overtime) till 3-5pm....such a simple system that keeps the lathes/mills producing parts 24 hours 7 days a week...some work sat 5am-12noon also but it's all by choice not cause the company says you have to!

You get paid by your worth, not what everyone else is worth. Not to mention you pay your union dues. The legal system works for everyone, unions don't have a place anymore.

I'm not agreeing with split shifts as personally, it's fucking STUPID and I would be looking for a new job quick. Shit, swing shifts are just as bad and have made me quit several jobs...

Again, not being pro-union as to be honest, it encourages laziness among some employees and an overly unjust sense of entitlement - But I think they DO have their place. The legal system doesn't work for everyone - That has been proven time and time again. Courts are generally speaking, a place for people with great financial means.
The problem with alot of careers now, especially in the US, is that getting "paid by your worth" is a lost concept. You have so many illegals in the country who will do your work for nothing - How can a company pass that up? Quite often, they won't - And as a result, your worth absolutely plummits. It's always been a big flaw within the system.

PS as for union dues...They're not all that much generally, and are also a tax write-off - at least up here

I hate split shifts too, but they're usually necessary in the restaurant industry since most employees won't be needed between 2-5PM. I hated it so much, I decided to go back to school and leave them and the mind dumbing work behind. Best decision I've ever made.

join the army untill the dont complain about work hours

You know, I never bitched about work hours UNTIL I joined..... 0630 to 1700 is fine, but I've been shafted with a lot of 1800+ days and my son goes to bed at 2000. I'm rather annoyed at only getting 2 real hours a day with him. Today I got lucky. 0300 to 0730 ruck march, off the rest of the day.
