My wife said she cranked her car this evening. It had been sitting all day. It is an '89 turbo auto. Their is oil from the turbo xs blow off valve on the upper ic pipe pretty bad. Does this mean the turbo has blown a seal or is it something else? Thanks in advance for the help I know I'll receive from this fine, brilliant, helpful website I have grown to love.....................;)

Edit: When she cranked it white smoke blowed out the exhaust. She said a big white puff of it. Coolant is fine. It's also a new motor with my old turbo installed. Oil is blowing out of the bov pretty severely.

you could get a catch can for good measures installed and it shopudl prevent a lot of oil inside the Intercooler piping. And Bishop has pretty much all of it covered. Does it sputter at idle or is it sittign fine?

It does not sputter. Like SH said when I cranked it a LARGE cloud of white smoke came out the back. I turned it off(scared). When I cranked it again a smaller cloud then nothing. It seemed to run fine, I drove about 3 miles home. Of course I didn't really get on it. Also alot of oil is coming from the blow off valve. The head is only 3 months old. We bought a remanufactured motor with a remanufactured head. Thats why we thought it might be the turbo. Do you think it could still be the seals?:1zhelp:

if its the ebay remanufactured heads then yes :(
No not ebay. It was from American Engines. It has a 3 year unlimited milage warranty on the motor. The turbo came off of SH's car.

The head and engine have about 1000miles on them. The turbo has about 135000miles on it. That's why I thought it might be the turbo. I also thought I had read on here sometime before that when the turbo seal goes bad it would blow out oil. Really hoping to get a confirmation about what was already mentioned by Bishop or another diagnosis. Thanks alot.

if it's white it's coolant period i have yet to see white burnt oil. but then again nothing is guarateed but this is a pretty sure thing. it doesn't sputter ay it could be the seal's on the turbo cause if it were in the head it would be a constant billow so thats a good place to start.

do a compression check.

I just did a search on white smoke and came up with a few threads where people were having the same problem as my wife and I. They replaced their valve stem seals and still had the same problem. It ended up being their turbo seal or seals. I don't know how many their are. Anyways, I think I'm going to start with having her turbo rebuilt since the head is new. Worst case scenario, she has an upgraded turbo. Sounds like a win win situation to me...........lol

My car had same problem, I was running turbo xs type h bov (oil would come out),and a catch can (for the blowby). Then about 2 months ago all the white smoke caught up to me. I thought it was a bhg, white smoke from engine exhaust and even inside the car. Car cut off whenever i came to a stop. Well it wasnt a bhg for me i have the head off right now and slapping on all new gaskets. But im going with coolant burning as well b/c when I had the white smoke my coolant would have to be refilled all the time.
