hi friends,

i've just installed a used LSD i got from a fellow member here... it has new oil inside, was running ok ytd after installation.

and then there was a high pitch whine coming from the car this morning, onviously from some moving component, as itgoes away when the car stops. prime suspect is of course the LSD... i'm sure we put in enough oil, filled till it weeps from the filler plug.

anyone has any comments that might help?

could the LSD be damaged in anyway? it was shipped all he way here, but nothing was damaged in shipping, save for a bent mounting bolt..which was easily resolved....

little help?

thanx..:)

cheers

Did you use a slip additive for LSD or a synthetic fluid defined for LSD?

When an LSD gets worn it will whine. Incorrect fluid can harm it as well

yup. i used an oil specific to LSD's. the shop opened up the case to check the insides, and i was told that the LSD was working ok, no whining noises etc.. i didnt think a 30 mile drive would be the straw that broke its back...:-(

groan...

maybe i should change to a ddifferent oil? what do most people us though?

what can be done to rectify the whining if its worn? can the LSD be rebuilt?

thanx..:)

Does it whine on acceleration or deceleration?

+1 the person you bought it from may have not tightened the ring gear down and it may have turned out of lash spec. ive had a whining differential for 2 years now and its still strong so dont freak out too much now.. and pretty much every supra with an lsd ive ridden in has had a whine to it...

Dunno if I should be happy hearing this :)
It whines on acceleration n deceleration...

If the ring gear indeed is loose then I'm assuming I'll have to open it up to resolve it eh? :-(

May as well do it right once n for all I guess:)

Wonder if its a difficult job? I'll go search around for some diy thatsomeone else may have done to try n save me some time n $$ :)

Thx for all your responses. I guys rock.

:)

figured as much, if i end up disassembling it all I would prolly swap in a proper LSD and go solid spacer instead of the stupid crush washer.
thanks!
