Which turbo should I get guys? I have a non-ball bearing GT-35 turbo and it sucks. .58 hotside and .70 compressor. Made 350rwhp at 20psi. Anyways....I like the GT-37R from AMS with a .82 rear housing (capable of 750hp) or a GT-40R but I'm afraid of the lag.

I'm going to get a built head on my 1JZ soon, so that will make a big difference for a rev range and power.

EDIT: If people can tell me what they voted and why, that would be great.

I have a gt40 going on my car. I hear sppol is about 4000-4200rpms which is fine with me.

I reccomend a DBB SP61/ T61 if you are looking for 500-600 whp. I run one on my 1j with a .58 a/r housing and I love it!!!. It makes boost as soon as you put your foot down, and full boost at 3700 rpm. I made 370 whp at 15 psi and 420 whp at 17 psi with a really rich tune. Some mk4 guys have made 600+ whp with this turbo. SP63 or SP67's are also really great too if you want more power, 67's can do 700+ whp.

OK
why not just change your .58 a/r on your gt35 to something like maybe a .81 a/r or bigger? that should help w/ more hp at lower boost but the spool will be alittle later

Whats the exhaust side specs on the ams gt37r? Its just a dbb 67 right? But is ita p trim or like a gt40 exhaust wheel? My 67 was awesome on my old 1j. With the cams it was a FUN ride, full boost (i had a .70 a/r rear) ~4500 with cams and pulled hard to redline (7600). If its a dbb 67 (p trim) I say go for that for sure. The .81 will spool a little slower then mine (but the dbb will make up for that) and will make more top end power. That would be an awesome combo imo. I was probably making 450whp maybe more on 17 psi with my crower 264 cams.

A regular GT35 is a small turbo (like 52-55mm turbo) the GT35r got the 82 56 trim compressor where as the gt35s have a 52 trim 76mm compressor. They wont flow much more then 400whp.

The GT-37R is making 700+ hp on 2.3L EVO's over at AMS Performance, that turbo is straight sick! So I figured, I could take the same turbo and use it on our 1jz that is 2.5L of pure high-rev fun.

I thought about just changing the rear housing, but I want a DBB turbo. The SP67 is something I may want to consider, I have heard only but good things from that turbo.

My hp goals? 650+ just for the ego trip.

As far as specs on that turbo, I really dont know. I guess it's suppose to be a full size GT-35R, but the exhaust housing at .82 instead of .81.

GT-40R is appealing for more top end power, and daily driving I'm out of boost making good mpg. lol. Sort of.

if you are looking to build the head soon then don't worry to much about the spool time just go w/ a big turbo so later if you want more power you just have to crank up the boost and not replace the turbo like how you are doing now. i would go w/ something like the gt4088 or something bigger mayb the gt4294 for more power. it just depens on how much power you want to make

You mean full boost dont you? no way the turbo is JUST starting to see positive pressure at 4k.

I will be building the head and putting on the turbo at the same time. I want to rev to 9K as long as the turbo can flow that high, which I'm sure it will.

that means you will need a .81 a/r for sure then, the .81 should keep pushing up to atleast 8500 rpms
