Hey,

Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to go to get my wheels either powdercoated or done in gunmetal? Thank you

Search the internet for a powerder coating gun, get the powder paint, and powder away... Total will be less that $150 for it all. Cheaper then paying someone to do your wheels and you can also powder coat everything else on your car.... Powder coat for friends, and make money.... :bigthumb:

It's not quite that simple......

a blasting, stripping and/or solvent cleaning step to insure the substrate is free of any oils, dirt, rust, mill scale, etc;
a pretreatment step (an important step not done by all coaters) during which the product is treated with a pretreatment chemical or conversion coating, usually phosphate or zinc based, to further protect it and improve the surface for powder adherence;
rinse, rinse, rinse..dry completely then
powder coat, usually done with an electrostatic gun, but sometimes in a fluidized bed;
finally, FULLY cure the powder in the oven, generally at 375-400 deg. F, 15-20 minutes (varies) , making sure the oven is preheated to temp

I had my wheels powdercoated, $60 a wheel isn't bad for sandblasting/stripping and powdercoat. They look awesome. I say get powdercoat, its well worth the money.

aye mate, where?? That's a great price, got any pics?

Malloy, I had already thought about that option, and seeing how YOUR wheels turned out, I'm considering that as well.

i got my wheels powdercoated gunmetal with clear for CDN$250 for all 4, which inlcudes stripping the old paint. they turned out wicked, now im getting a bunch of other parts done the same color.

also, i painted my valvecovers with the dupont graphite, and it is nowhere near as nice as the powdercoat on the wheels.

Here's the deal, dont even mess with powder coat (IMHO).

1-Get yourself about 4 cans of the extra strength aerosol spray paint remover.

2-take wheels off car and spray liberally with above mentioned paint remover

3-cover wheels in aluminium foil while paint remover is working (enhances paint removers strength)

4-Wait like 20 mins or so (or whatever the can's directions say).

5-hose off wheels and be amazed by how shiny they are, (seriously once the paint comes off you dont really have to do shit) they look like they just came from the metal polishers.

6-Marvel at how great your formally dingy wheels look and at how smart you are and at how much dough you saved.

After you have cleaned the rims and are ready to paint I suggest you check out Rustoleum Hammered Paint got mine at Lowes. Im doing stock wheels in Black Hammered. After this paint dries in about a week its as hard as baked enamel. The finish hides all the blemishes and looks awesome I already did my wing with it and am working on my wheels. The black hammered matches the trim on my white 89 almost perfectly.

It will look great for a year or two, until the paint starts chipping off. Though you could just strip and paint again. Next time I'm gonna spend the extra money and have my wheels powdercoated.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but the same guy who did my spoiler is gonna do my wheels (strip, prep, paint, clear) for a pretty smoking deal ;) Plus I get to pick a color out of the book so it should end up pretty nice. Thanks again!
