where does it all go?

hello all,

i just got my 86.5 MKiii yesterday and i have been working on it all today. the oil was low and new, so i used some lucus oil to top it off. drove it about 25 miles around town and the lucus made the engine run allot smoother. brought it back home and it was low again, about half way on the dip stick!:nono:. topped it off again with 10w-30 and drove it again. once again low:3d_frown:. i have no oil or bubbles from the radiator, no smoke from exhaust, no drips from underneath. i get a slight ping, could it be coming from the valves? should i check the plugs for oil?it has 240,000 miles but the car in MINT. whoever had it before babied the thing.:love:

Although it may seem to sometimes, oil doesnt dissapear. if your not leaking it, your burning it. Is it turbocharged? If so your turbo might be leaking and the oil is collecting in the intercooler.

if its a turbo its probably uses oil anyways. i know i have a brand new motor with the exception of the turbo and it uses some oil but nothing crazy. maybe your turbo is going bad. if its not dripping its using somewhere.

With that many miles it probably has bad rings.

My 88 NA had bad rings and burned a qt of oil every 100 miles. It sat for 3yrs with a blown head gasket before I bought it and fixed it.

rings? damn... i hope it just pasts smog for right now so i can save up to fix it. around how much should i expect to spend on parts to replace the rings? will there be visible oil from the (oil gallery?) plugs?

Plugs will have a buildup from the oil. Rings usually means complete engine rebuild.

could that much oil come from oil gallery plugs? ill perform a compression check also. what is normal pressure for the 7MGE?

Replacing rings requires a complete teardown, and its smart to replace bearings, seals, oil pump obviously head gasket and timing belt. money in parts is not the problem, its all the labor involved if your gonna do all that work you might as well make it faster. Find yourself a 7m-gte in junkyard and rebuild that while your driving (and dumping oil in) the tired ge. when the gte is ready swap it in with a new clutch and youll be much happier long run, and for not much more money.
you can use www.car-part.com to seach junkyards in the area, or inqure in the parts section here.
also if you have a w58 trans, consider swapping that for a R154 its alot stronger and easier to do everything at once.

the first 2 cylinders had fresh oil on top. i will be replacing the plug. i also took off the throttle body and check all the other plugs (did same thing as tsrm says to do). plugs look normal, so its not the rings. i put it all back together and i hear pops from the exhaust now.:3d_frown:

thanks for all the help so far guys. smashed plug gap, running great now. topped it off, drove it 10 miles today and no sign of leaks. dip stick was same as top off.

Toyota sells a three step fuel system cleaner for $24. anyone use it?

i drove it another 70 miles and dip stick is still the same . i went up into the mountians today and smelt burning oil. check under the hood and it was coming from the lower part of the header right next to the tranny.it was quite a bit of smoke. started having trouble shifting after that. what would cause this?

your valve cover could be leaking in the rear

Sounds like your valve covers are leaking oil. If that oil were to hit the exhaust, you may not notice any burning oil or find any dripping oil.

Replace your valve cover gaskets and possibly spark plugs with some cheapie NGK coppers.
