I think there's already quite a few threads on this but the basic answer is, sone do some don't, me personally I don't, it depends on the tire I think, my car is currently not with me, but as soon as I go to it next time I'll let you know what size I'm running

i put spacers on my wheels because the just didd'nt stick out far enough.
be careful tho,if you need any work done on your suspension/brakes some shops won't touch the car with the spacers on it

get whatever makes your wheels stick out to your desired taste, but don't go too wide risking style for safety.

Yea, all we can do is give you opinions, so here's mine (from http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?125470-MKIV-TT-wheels-questions):

Since the stock mkiii wheels are the same width and offset all around, I'll have to do something about the mkiv wheels so that they'll have the same distance from the outer edge to the rotor in respect to each other.

Mkiv tt wheels are 8"/9.5" wide front/rear, +50 offset all around. That means the rear wheels will "stick out" more than the fronts, and my solution will be to get a spacer for the fronts. I made the calculations, and it looks like the rears stick out 19.05mm more than the fronts, so I'll need 20mm spacers. The results will be like .7" farther out than stock all around. My goal is to only have to buy one pair of spacers while still having the wheels stick out more, which seems like it's possible(...)

biggest problem with what you've done though is that the front and rear track widths are NOT the same. a better way is to physically measure out the fender gap, and use that as a baseline for the front and rear pairs separately to determind the spacers you need to "even out" the fitment.

if you REALLY want to get into the mechanics vs. the style aspect start calculating the change in roll center from pushing the contact patch out, and use THAT to determine the spacers you want/need....lol
