i think my wheel bearings are shot, but when i try to shake the tire there is no play. i'm really hating my car right now. when i'm on the highway above 75mph the shaking is annoying and it feels like the car is going to rattle it's to death. i feel it in my seat and the steering wheel.

also i get clunking all the time, when going around corners, over bumps, etc..

i have already repalced both lower ball joints, new inner and outer tierods. what else do i need to check.

btw.. is it possible to change the bearings without a press

see the TSRM. you need a shop press to replace the wheel bearings.
that vibration is probably caused by your wheels being out of balance.

the wheel bearing can be 1 problem but its not why your car is shaking. Unless the bearing is broken, but then there will be a play in the wheel.

take the wheel off, front caliper/rotor off. spin the hub by hand. If you hear noises the bearing is dry and probubly out. Check on the backside to make sure the dust cover has not fallen off.

Spin the tire just in the air and make sure the caliper is not locking up. My front left caliper was locking up few months back and above 35mph the whold car would start to shake.

the Hwy rattle can be driveshaft. get under it and turn it by hand and see if its got too much play.. maybe center bearing is gone.

If you get a clunking when going around corners, especially sharp corners [90 degrees] at low speeds like when driving through parking lots, I have heard that it can be caused by a busted motor mount or engine mounting bracket.

thanks fellas,

motor motors are new. i have a 89+ body with the 88 rack. strange i guess. what is the torque spec on the motor mounts. i'm going to check everything.

does anyone know the sizes to of the tranny muont bolts and the bolts that bolt the tranny to the block. i think i might replace those as well.

i also have a new (well better) center bearing i need to replace.

also is the tranny mount replaceable?>

Mike, the block bolts are 14mm 1.25 Pitch.

Tranny mount has 4 12mm bolts and can be replaced.

I remember you did a Auto to 5spd a while back, did you use wings to support the transmission?

The Engine mount bolts I Tq to 100Ft/LB. Not sure what the actual specs are.

You Square mounts is a early 89 production car. Its normal.

I had a rattle in my 86.5 front end for years. Had the dealer check it, replace shocks and everything else. After years of frustration, I noticed that the hood was not tight when latched down, still had some play, which caused the noise when going over bumps. Tightened the hood latch and problem solved.

I'm surprised no one mentioned A-arm bushings....this can account for the turning clunk and vibration. I would imagine you would have seen this durring the ball joint replacement, but definately worth looking into.
