What's the ideal engine temp to be at??

I'm wondering if I should raise the temp on my 1J.

The stock t-stat opens at about 180 F, I have a controller for my electric fans, and I set them up to cool at 185. When running it stays dead on 185 all the time.

Will there be a performance or fuel economy difference if I raise the temp? What is the IDEAL range for a 1J?

I set it close to the t-stat opening temp because I didn't want it to drop too much if I were driving on the Interstate with all the wind cooling it down. I figure a constant temp regardless of driving conditions is the way to go...like factory cars, right?

Now that I've driven the beast for a couple of months the temp never moves from 185, even on the interstate. I think I can turn it up without it fluctuating, so I was wondering if I should do so....

Thanks.
Nick.

Most Toyota ECU's are happy with a coolant temp between ~180 to 210 deg F. Based on what you said, yours looks good ;)

man i think my sensor is off or something then...i have a megan racing gauge and on my 1j it never goes over 175degree unless i let it idle for more then 10minutes after driving a long time, while driving on freeway the temp is around 145degrees and most importantly i dont even have my e-fan setup yet.

This is an interesting thread, I was thinking my car was running hot (200-210*F range) due to it only having one fan on it, but sometime it doesn't even get up to that so it's no even getting up to normal temp. Well I've already ordered some Spal fans so we'll see what they do.

Stock twin 1JZGTE's run hot by nature. If you're under 210 degrees that's a miracle upon itself.

Since I've gone single.. I don't even need to turn on my radiator fan. I've sat in traffic in 90 degree air temp with it off for 5 mins and the water temp is still under 200. Using just a factory 3 row MKIV TT rad and 190 degree stat (ive always got the best fuel miledge with a 190).
