that large flat nut that you can screw in and out. i thought it might control the tension on the mount but i couldn't verify this. also i'm new to supras, so are there any aftermarket mounts using stiffer rubber, id prefer not to go solid mount.

Welcome to the forum! I have not heard of any solid mounts for that. That transmission is pretty solid. I go by the rule If it's not broke, don't fix it, so I would leave it unless you are having tranny issues.

i am also wondering about this... i can push up on my tranny when under it and there is like an inch of travel... i have turned the screw but nothing seems to happen... is it just a bushing? do they make a poly for it?

I don't think you can actually adjust anything with that. If you have a lot of movement you probably would want to replace the mount. I don't know if there is a poly replacement but even a new factory piece is much better than an old, gummy, and falling apart one.
