What should I look for on a 1JZ swapped car?

Hey guys,

I'm going to go check out a 1JZ MK3 tomorrow morning and I was wondering if there's anything specific I should be checking for on the 1J.

I was thinking like quallity of harness splicing and that sort of thing. Is there any real way to tell that a swap was done carefully without tearing it all apart in the guy's driveway? He said the swap was done almost 2 years ago and has been great since then.

The car has:
3" DP and catback (looks to be maybe HKS muffler?)
ACT 6 Puck clutch
Tokicos and Eibachs
550cc Injectors and 2JZ coil pack
Turbo Timer
and some other minor mods that escape me right now.

I got a couple little pics from the seller but nothing too high res. I'll have good pics after I see it tomorrow.

Annd the engine bay. It looks like the wiring was a little haphazard, but I'm not /that/ concerned as long as it's complete I can clean everything up.

So anyway, after a little too much detail; what should I be looking at on this car. (Hopefully not head gasket or rod bearings! :nono:)

yeah... that post really helps. good job

wonder why guy is using 2j coils?

id say as long as there arent any big eletrical issues and the car doesnt smoke, youre good. things dont really break easy

Whoops, that one was my bad. I meant to say 2JZ RESISTOR PACK.

I checked a little and found this little tidbit about it:

"As far as the injectors go, the 1j use 370cc high impendance side feed injectors stock. The jap spec 2jzgte 440cc are a straight plug and play replacement. The US spec 2jzgte injectors are 550 low impedance. They are a direct swap into the rail, but you would need to wire in the injector resistor to make them work right."

Well, the swap was a little rough.

The car felt pretty good and ran well. All the stuff was complete and hooked up but a lot of things were kind of zip tied in. It looked like it was started out with really good intentions but then rushed to finish.

The only thing that really bothers me about the car is that it has a salvage title :( . Oregon is a state that issues salvage titles on stolen vehicles, and that's what happened to this one. There's no frame or body damage but the title is still branded.

He wants $5K obo, and I'm not sure how the salvage title affects the value, because the car is in pretty mint condition. I was thinking more like $4K because I do know what the 1JZ swap costs to do, what a non-salvage MK3 is worth, and what his mods are worth.

Looks like you get a few goodies as well.... I'd pay $5k...

If everything else is mint and it runs good, just looks like a little cleaning up should be all it needs. You can always go back and check/re-do wiring if ya need to. Average 1JZ swap is easily near $4K alone.

It's got an 89+ climate control and no real rust that I can see in the pics.

In the northwest rust is usually not something we worry about ;) despite constant rain, there's no salt on the roads and cars last a very long time without corroding to pieces.

I also forgot to mention that it has an SAFC2 and a Blitz upgraded ECU.

crap.

I really hope he doesn't sell it today. He's got people coming down from seattle to check it out.

I was a little too skittish to give him a deposit yesterday and I won't know for sure about a loan until tomorrow. Plus he's two hours away so I can't just run over there and drop one off...

I should have just called the damn car for myself and given him the deposit. Now I have to bite nails all day today.

Please oh please let them hate the car.

looking at one of the engine bay pics.it looks like a jumper harness was used instead of extending the harness(good to diagnos wiring issues).it has the hydro fan still, just make sure the fan speeds up and doesn't run at one speed.2j coils are the same as 1j.
