pull a small hose off the throttle body so its sucking air, this makes the car run a little leaner and should get you past smog.i live in memphis tn, and when i took my mazda trough it failed both smog test by alot. i went down the street to a gas station and pulled a small vac hose off the mani and went striaght back and passed.

Yeah, don't fix whats wrong so your car performs correctly, just create a different problem to cancel out the effects of the first one.....

if the egr system is not working correctly(which is what would cause you to fail emmisons) then your car is actualy performing better. the egr system only hurts performance. why do you think people block off the egr when they dont have to pass emmisons tests.

lol, there are many reasons for failing emissions. EGR, yes, faulty o2 sensor, plugged up or gutted cat., fouled plugs, faulty plug wires, cap, or rotor button, a bad fuel injector, burning oil from old, worn valve seals or piston rings, even a vacuum leak. You can fail emissions for running to lean, also... Just guessing at how to fix what you hope is the problem isn't always gonna work.
And by the way, your right... if you don't have to pass emissions, you don't need the EGR. But if you DO have to pass emissions, it would be better if it worked correctly. Blocking it completely is different from just having it mostly plugged up, which pushes up your hydrocarbons, and makes the already bad pollution there worse. Like I said in my first post. Take it to a good local mechanic, and get it fixed right. You live in California, it should be easy to find a good import shop there.

if you go to toyota for a cat, they are going to charge you an arm and a leg...what I did was buy a magnaflow universal cat for 55$....passed, then took it off and got my new exhaust and run no cat. If your cat is messed up and you know it, that is your best bet to passing...when i did my smog test several years ago i failed by alot, then put the new cat on and passed easily. And if that still doesnt work I would then follow up with the o2 and egr.....the other stuff will effect it but not that much.
EDIT: yes your air filter can matter if its clogged, it restricts air coming into you engine therefore making you run a bit richer
