O.K. this is the deal. I have always used 30w oil for the first 500 miles and then changed to 20-50 after. I was wondering what some of you others use for breakin and if you have better advise on this.

I've heard that a lower viscosity-5W30 or 10W30-natural oil is the best choice to go with for the first two oil changes on a new engine. After that you can use whatever you want.

This topic may just be a matter of opinion but I thought I'd pass what I've heard by some of you to see what you think of that.

I'll never run anything nearly as thick as 20W50. The friction you get from that is excessive. Especially if you have a turbo, that's too thick.

I use straight 30 weight, not for use on vehicles manufactured after 1836 stuff for the initial warm up and first 100 miles.

The reason I disagree with this method is that until the rings seat, you don't want to boost the engine. The ideal way to break in a gte would be to remove the turbo and rail the piss out of it as soon as it's warm. After a few heat cycles, 100 miles or so, put a turbo on it and have fun.
I drive my turbo cars 500 miles late at night just stop and go with as much throttle as I can give it whilest maintaining vaccum. One time I just turned at every stop sign in a residential neighborhood. The miles pile on quick when you're litterally going in circles. ;)
