It depends on what the car has had before.

If it has std, stay with std - don't go syn as the seals have a habit of leaking.

If it has syn, stay syn.

I like the mobil one. 15w50 for hot weather, and 10w30 for the cold.

The motor only has about 4000 miles on it, the previous owner put non synthetic in it to break it in but my cousin who has been a mk3 owner for 5+ years says to put synthetic in it.

I was always told Castrol 20w-50 was best for import performance in warmer climates. But, now synthetics are much more common. I started my new motor off with Royal Purple 20w-50. So far so good.

never try to break-in a motor with synthetic. its too slippery and wont let your rings seat. check out http://mototuneusa.com/thanx.htm and read the break-in secrets articles for a detailed explanation.

you can switch to syn anytime after the full breakin period (1500 miles). if the car is old you run the risk of making leaky seals leak more. this is because synthetic has a tendancy to clean your engine more than dino oil. dino oil can help plug up leaky seals with crud so they dont seem to leak as much. synthetic doesnt MAKE your seals leak. it just brings your attention to a problem you already have.

some of the best general info on oil ive found is here http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/

the "final oil thread to end them all" written by grandlordkhorne can be found http://www.northeasterntuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2964
its also on supraforums but the damn search at SF never works for me.

i know you didnt ask, but good info on oil filters is here http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters.html

oh, i use mobil1 full synthetic 0W-30

I come from a land down under
I break a fresh motor in on Valvoline single 30 weight then switch to Castrol Edge Synthetic, Last motor was in much better condition after I tore it down compared to the Anglomoil Synthetic I ran in a previous build.

I thought our cars needed some sort of heavy weight oil to prevent rod knock, yet I notice a lot of you guys going with 10w30, which is what the manual calls for.

I'm due up for an oil change and am wondering about what weight to put it. I just have 10w30 Castrol GTX in there now.
