What is your wastegate set at?

My turbo (Garrett to4e w/ 50 trim) is supposed to be set with a 14 pound wastegate. Is this standard for a turbo of my size? All I really want to run is up to 14 psi. I just don't think I need more than that. What do you guys/ gals have your wastegate set at? What kind of turbo do you have, and how much boost are you running? Do you have the DDP or regular down pipe?

Sorry for the third degree, but I'm having problems with my setup, and I'm trying to get a few ideas of which direction I may need to go. Thanks alot.............lol

My upgraded CT-26 came set at 10psi. Brian had the wastegate actuator arm threaded though, so I can adjust it to my liking. I like it lower so I can tune it up with the boost controller, I run between 14-16psi.

Hey Patrick, thanks for the reply. I guess it must be hard for everyone else to figure out why I can't figure this out. If you lower your wastegate adjustment, and raise your boost pressure, why doesn't the wastegate just open and you lose your boost. It seems to me that you would raise your wastegate pressure.

Let me start over. If my wastegate is set at 14 psi., shouldn't it fully open at 14 psi.? If that isn't correct then someone please tell me. I hate feeling stupid and asking dumb questions, but I've got to get to the bottom of my boost problem. Feel free to flame away, I can take it. I'm actually a very intelligent man on a lot of topics. Supras however aren't at the top of my list. Supras would fall right below underwater welding..................lol

If the wastegate was set to 14psi, any boost made beyond that would be released (wasted) straight down the exhaust. That's where the boost controller comes in. A manual boost controller is just a controlled bleed on the wastegate actuator. It will make the wastegate think it sees less boost, so it will take more boost to open the wastegate. Without the wastegate the turbo would spool infinitely and thinks would break (kind of sounds like whats going on).

If you want to play with it, try putting a plastic vaccum nipple between the compressor inlet and wastegate actuator vaccum line. Make three tiny pinholes in the nipple. At first cover all three pinholes with the vaccum line. If you slide one line off a little, so one of the pinholes bleeds to air it should bring up the boost pressure a little.

Actually since your making up to 18psi, try checking the reference line between the compressor inlet and the wastegate actuator. Make sure the line isn"t teed off to anything else, and that it isn"t cut or anything.

Thanks Pat. I'll try that. Did you find anything else you needed off of this car before I send it away? Maybe you can come by and help me fix this problem. If you don't need anything else off of the car then don't worry about it.

Nah I think I'm set, I appreciate it though. If I had known you were still working on this I'd have stayed the weekend but I'm already back in South Carolina.

I would have cut my car off before I let it hit 31 psi. OH yeah I forgot to mention that I'm a big sissy when it comes to boost. When I was dynoing friday, I was watching my boost gauge and Blake was watching the computer to watch for rpm's. I seen it go past 15 and I hit him on his shoulder to cut it off. It reached 18 before he stopped, but it was still climbing. I may could have made more hp, but 406 is more than I'll ever need to stomp a few local mustangs................lol

You can hit the key switch in less than a 1/4 of a second?

31psi boost spikes happen in a blink of an eye.

Maybe your turbo spikes to 31 psi in a 1/4 second. Mine doesn't. It was a steady climb from 10-18. No spiking, just constant steady movement. I told him that I would be watching it and I would tap him if I wanted him to shut it off. I tapped, he shut off. Didn't really think someone would find that hard to believe, but some people are just skeptical...............To each his own.

it was hauling ass for that few seconds ;) My engine has handled it so far....lol. It had 116 octane in it at the time, and still has good compression numbers so no harm done.
