What is this?

I rebuilt my engine and I still have no idea what this is. How sad. (BTW: this pic is not from my car. thanks, bigaaron!)

I want to unclutter the engine bay a bit. Ive noticed that some people have pipes running from these cam cover nozzles to a cannister of some kind.... I've been told that this gets rid of the fumes out of the camcovers (fumes from what?!) but what about the nozzle that comes from the manifold itself. Where does that go?... I'm wondering if this doesnt have something to do with EGR because it DOES recirculate and it is always filled with sludge. Your guess is as good as mine. If you know what it is, thanks in advance.

What are my options to get rid of this ugly thing?

Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Any oil blow-by from your pistons will go in that hose. You need to have those holes open so that the engine can breath. I capped mine off and it blew my cam seals out. The canister is called a catch can, it just catches the oil and holds it so it doesn't go into your intake.

PCV system. It purges the engine crankcase of oil and fuel vapor. Its a must have, and a good for your engine thing. You could get one of those aftermarket 'catch cans' that the next poster will tell you about.:icon_bigg

The line going into the intake manifold is so the vapor/oil has somewhere to go. On boost it follows the line to the accordian hose and on vaccum it goes straight into the manifold.
