Hi, after taking out my turbo i stumbled upon this white corrosion like substance on my turbo propeller and waste gate door. My first guess is burnt coolant because burnt coolant blows white smoke. I would like to know what this stuff is.

Some of the additives in fuel will leave the white stuff.

Do you have any reason to suspect Coolant?

yes actually. I just bought this car and i've been working on it for the past few weeks. The previous owner put in a refurbished head and im not sure if it had a bhg. In the coolant i found some oily residue so that got me suspicious of a bhg. Thanks for your reply.

It would be worth doing a test with the HG/Coolant test kit and welcome to SM!

That wont be necessary since I'm in the process of tearing apart the motor. Thanks again for your help.

ive always heard from a great source here in nashville(jeff at turbo auto) that those are tell tale signs of running lean. IJ is the man though. but its gotta be one of the 2 posibilities.

you know what guys, it can be all of the above. The guy I bought it from cranked up the boost to 12/13 psi or so without monitoring the a/f ratio. The coolant has oily residue which is why I suspect bhg. The engine is locked up from a spun bearing (so i've been told). Thanks for all your replys.

The stock system has 2 cats, a pre cat and the normal cat.. If either of these gets restricted the heat will not be able to get out fast enough and you can sometimes tell by that color that it has been hot...

It is hard to tell from a picture..So I am not saying the cats are plugged up, just that they could be plugged...

I just took off my turbo and it looked the same way. I have a BHG and I spun a bearing so it's all getting redone.

Just checking that this is caused by the BHG and not running lean. I never really had white smoke at all, just a little at startup.
