What is this part and do I really need it?

It's the brass colored piece located right on top of the oil pump drive gear. A buddy of mine is doing a rebuild and he's missing it. Is this part necessary and can someone direct me to the parts number? Greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's the pilot bush for the Oil pump and yes it's needed..

I never though about this, but should replacing that be part of a rebuild?

Definitely should if the block is cleaned with anything that could attack the brass
