What does the stock hood weigh, and what's the lightest hood available?

I've been searching for an hour and I give up... it's not even in the A70 weight index. What does the stock steel hood weigh?

Also, does anyone know what any of the various brands/styles carbon fiber and fiberglass hoods weigh? I know some of them are more for show than weight reduction, and I don't want to spend $600 to find out I'm saving 10 pounds.

Finally found some info, the stock hood weighs 47 pounds.

According to Duane, a CFX hood is 14 pounds, but those weren't your average hood so I'd expect they are lighter than most.

Carbon Creations or Vis seem to be the most available hoods for our car, anyone ever weigh one of those?

They have a group buy in the "Approved group buy" section, it's not a stock hood though. I believe it's fourteen pounds as well, but I can't swear by it.

The ones that Central Composites is making us weigh 19.8 lbs IIRC. There is also a GB on the Socal Supras forum, there is a thread in Mk3 General from T701JZ that links to it. They seem quite reasonably priced, although I don't know the weight on them.

You might want to try and find some info on the carbon hatch from carbon creations. I'm just guessing but I would think that the stock one is fairly heavy and photo's of carbon creations one appears to be a direct mold of the factory item. But I haven't seen one in person so don't take my word for that.

I like their hatch, but I'm only looking to get a hood right now. My stock hood took a hammering in a hail stom and it's rusted underneath, I'm tired of looking at it.

I'll check out those group buys, I'm only looking for an OE style hood though.

Zankoku has a nice oem style carbon fiber hood I was thinking about getting..check it out..not sure on the weight, but it looks like it might be lighter than the group buy hood on here.

st'ill buisness?

If you hesitate about spending the hard earn money for that small of a difference, know fiberglass? you already have a mold. 600$ I would use elsewhere. Sanding sucks though, must take a while.

Zankoku went out of business. Ace, Grimsta was his username, is no longer a vendor on here as he closed down. He sold his items and was planning on going back to his country the last time I spoke to him a few months ago.

Speaking of, has anybody ever thought of making a CF targa top?

Supply and Demand...;)

Not a lot of people want that and it won't be cheap and that's why they're only few companies who make parts for our cars. Majority of the owners are teens who want to go fast and either don't want to spend the money or don't have it.

Yep, they've been made but were very expensive. SupraofDoom had a lot of CF stuff about a year ago for sale but somebody cleaned 'em out before I could get anything :(

Carbon Creations has a vented hood. I DID indeed talk to Carbon creations to see if they would make one with out the vents, they said they could do it.

Makes sense.

It's been beaten to death on here... the glass is the heavy part, not the hatch itself. Unless it's a style preference, your money is probably better spent elsewhere. Plus, pulling weight off a nose-heavy car before lightening up the front significantly... not the best of ideas from a handling balance perspective.

Been done before, Suitcase Jefferson on here had a rather interesting thread about his experience with the one he bought, I'd read that before buying one...

Haha, he did have a rather nice collection, I picked up a couple bits from him, but I can't remember exactly what now. I'm genuinely surprised Shine hasn't produced a hood for our cars yet...

Yeah, I saw theirs, I just wasn't able to find a weight. They seem to make form>function stuff so I was concerned it was a 30 pound pile of chopper gun fiberglass with a carbon skin on the top.

I was hoping to find someone who had one and weighed it (the carbon creations hood I mean).

I am replacing it for cosmetics, but I do care about the weight just as much, I want to save as much as I can for the money. I already did everything else I can, other than a racing battery (which will happen when I find one that can survive repeated short trip driving).

The JZA80 has an aluminum hood and roof. I would go with a fiberglass hood over CF. The whole weave thing just looks incredibly gay and does not fit the upscale style of the Supra.
