What does it mean to O-ring a block?

Just saw a block that is for sale that has been "O-ringed for high boost"... What is that? And should I do it?

Thanks,
Jake

You cut a groove into the block that takes a stainless steel wire.

The wire sits proud of the block and provides localised pressure on the Fire ring in a composite gasket helping it seal combustion pressure or under a Copper gasket.

Not needed on our motors with an MLS gasket Jake.

My friend did this to his 86 shelby charger, It is supposed to be bullet proof if you can get it to seal??. He just told me the other day it's leaking again so I am not impressed with it at all. 3rd time may be the charm with a custom copper HG... :dunno:

If the ends of the wire aren't dressed correctly and butted just right they'll leak even then if you're using a Copper gasket it's pretty hard to seal the water passages.

Another alternative is "Cooper Rings" But the 7M's bore spacing is too close for them. (Gas filled copper rings that drops into a machined recess's in the top of the block)

His was leaking coolant both times, first on a stock hg and now on steel gasket? He is a machinist and he said it was done right (the stainless ring install)...LOL, but i have no idea??, I will mention your "copper rings" to him though. :)

Joel: O-rings + Steel gasket = bad!

The O-Ring needs to sink into whatever gasket material you use or there won't be enough pressure on the water passage part of the gasket and it'll leak!

(I saw a brand new Cosworth Sierra block destroyed by a machinist not understanding this concept I took one look while it was being assembled and said "That will leak" his reply "Everyone is useing them this way now" it left the pit got to the main straight and blew)

As I said Cooper Rings aren't an option for us as there isn't enough room to fit them on a 7M.

The first gasket was an oem type but the ring was not seated right on the compression (fire) ring of the gasket...

The second was a full metal gasket, not copper and i'm not positive it was steel either???.. I will ask him again. I think it was softer than steel?

I agree 100% with you on why its leaking water.. Hopefully he figures it out.. Thanks again for the info Ian..

I like the idea, but it is not for me..LOL

We copper wire o-ring our drag bike IJ, We cut a groove in both the head and the cylinder for the one wire o-ring. Then we use bearing cinch (620 locktite) to seal the rest of the head. This worked well for many years but was a pain in the ass every time we had to deck the cylinder or the head. So now we just cut the head to have a spigot type negative ring around the inner most area near the bore, and a positive raised ring cut from the cylinder to match. These press fit together for our seal and now we use only a machine finish and no headgasket at all. Billet aluminum head to a chromemolly cylinder.

No way, in fact there is hardly any room between the water jackets and the chambers to o-ring anyway. The wire we were using is 50 thou.

SCE Gaskets has a new headgasket that has metal O-rings already in the headgasket. They say it holds the highest hp? Not for our rigs yet though...
http://www.scegaskets.com/products/titan.html

I see they also make a copper gasket for the 7mgte(.032"-.093") for $95.95 from summit.

SCE Gaskets Inc. legendary Pro Copper Head Gaskets, used and recommended by top professional teams to seal 7,000 horsepower Top Fuel motors. These fine gaskets are equally potent in 500 horsepower street strip motors. They are made from C11000 ASTM B-152-92 copper sheets, annealed to Rockwell F-32 after manufacturing, Skin sealed in engine sets. These exceptional gaskets are also available in "Pro Heat Treat" hardness for those engines requiring resistance to extreme combustion pressures.
Key Benefits:

Available in your choice of bore and thickness for more popular performance engines than any other manufacturer. SCE Gaskets, Inc. believes in quality and customer service.
