Well, if im going to save this engine, i need to get rid of the 'smoked' look. Im not sure what to soak the metal components in, ie TB, valve covers, intake etc.

Would mineral spirits be enough? or something else?

steam cleaning (in solution for a couple days) should take off the majority of the crap. You will waste your time with mineral spirits/varsol/etc - it requires a lot of work to even get the oily residue free. Ultrasonic cleaning (if you have access) with a detergent solution (eg. alconox) should also work well.

start with some hot soapy water...seriously people overlook the usefulness of good old detergent (I like dish soap myself). Water is afterall the "universal solvent". Its wont do anything on big gloppy burnt on plastic from insulation or anything like that, but its basically free to try it.

That dry ice gun thing was pretty damn cool. Kind of like a cross between steam cleaning and sandblasting, but with zero cleanup.

when do you plan on doing this???? If you come back to pa I can toss your head in the big ultrasonic cleaner here at work....I also have access to 100 gallons of parts cleaner LOL.....we can also check your internals to see if anything is warped and can probably test the hardness of the head to make sure its not anealed.....also can polish up the cam covers with all the scotchbrite and buffing wheels in the deburr department....

But if your staying at school then I personally would pick up 3 gallons of denatured alcohol cause it won't harm plastics and won't etch aluminum...its damn good stuff...pick up some medium wire brushes also......all this stuff can be bought at home depot or lowes.

You bring your shit back home and I'll help ya out....acid baths and hot tanks cost money and thats money you need for a new ride....I'll hook you up man but need the parts here if you can.

i just had a guy offer me his running, black hardtop 89 for cheap too *though i wish it was targa). hopefully everything works out.

Edit: i have an HKS stopper on there now...im not sure i can reuse that

Edit edit: although if i can get that running supra.....i could essentially take what i need from mine as far as the interior goes and throw the engine in the back...

there ya go....whatever you can do to get the motor up here...and trans...i may buy that from you if its for sale...

I would take the passenger seat out and toss the motor right there cause it would be a bitch getting the motor out the back and toss the trans in the back.
