Your mechanic is probably right. Seems to be a common problem with the 7m.

Check your chrome screws that fasten down the cam covers to see if they may not be tight. Those little rubber washer deals kinda keep the screws tight. I would change the cam cover gaskets and clean the oil out of the galleys and check your rubber washers(they may need to be replaced if your cam cover fasteners won't stay tight) and you should be o.k.

I replaced the screws on mine because the previous owner kinda stripped them out using the wrong size screwdriver. A pretty large tip should be used.

Good luck.

your mechanic is most likely correct. the first day i got my car, i noticed that i had a tiny bit of oil burning out the exhaust. when i started tearing the car down to get to the spark plugs, i noticed that there was oil in the spark plug galley. sure enough, the valve cover gaskets were leaking. it IS a common problem with our cars. since i didn't have the new gaskets on hand, i used high temp silicon to make a new gasket. has been great ever since. never leaks.

new gaskets are only like $12 iirc from rockauto. coulda even been $5. easy to install, but make sure you torque the screws down to the factory spec. 8 ft-lb or they'll strip.

Ok here is what i did to solve cam cover leaks and oil covered plug wires

Get new cam cover gaskets W/the grommets that go under the screws

Use some FIPG on the gaskets when they are installed and pay attention to corners

clean the galley cover and use FIPG under it and on the fastners that retain it

get rid of the stock cam cover screws get some real bolts the water pump bolts work :)

just my $0.02

Mine did the same exact thing. Before i found the oil in the plug holes and thought my clutch was out because every time i launched hard the clutch would slip afterward, then i just found out that the oil in #6 plug hole was dumping down in there. Replaced valve cover gaskets and all was fine.

the gaskets arent the only problem. the big hex bolts that are holding down the spark plug metal holder plate thing. those leak also, you need to pop those out and put some fipg on them.
