I use the brakleen brand, i think thats the name (I'll check in the morning), it gives out a red spray, goes for about 6 bucks a can though, and its a pretty small bottle, good for like 2 or 3 brake jobs

i dont worry about it anymore cause, a ferrari stopped next to me one time and his brakes squelled, so i have come to the conclusion that if a ferrari owner can i can too.

Commonly the referred one is Permatex. They make it for nearly all auto store lines as well; so its all the same stuff just in a different bottle whether you buy napa, advance, carquest or Permatex, its all the same.

ya found it, but reading it i see it says only apply to metal backs of pads :::sigh::: so i gotta pull the caliper off, and the pads, apply it to back of metal back of pads.

"DO NOT APPLY TO FRICTION SURFACES" i thought thats what it fixed. oh well gotta wait for an open afternoon to do this i geuss.

No, i believe it collects the brake dust that causes the squeeling on the back of the pad.

You definiately spray it on the back of the pads. The spray is sticky so the dust sticks to it.

I would just live with the squeel until your next brake job. I'm just lazy. I wouldn't waste my time doing the job a second time just for some spray using the same parts especialy brake pads. Theres nothing wrong with doing that if your pads still have a good life time on them. Just me

you dont understand how loud it sqeeks on metalic pads, its litterally like a high pitched violin, its REALLY loud so i would do it just for the sound.

Brake noise has nothing to do with dust - it's usually the vibration. This stuff takes care of that, so the squealing goes away.

Occasionally, brake squeal is cause by misaligned pads, but this is usually only the case after an accident that warps your caliper or the mountings for them.

Brake squeal is a common problem, caused by a couple of things. 1 is that all the parts vibrate when the brakes are applied. 2 is that sometimes a tiny metallic particle in the pad will generate a very high-pitched sound under light braking, like coming up to a stop sign in town. #2 can eventually go away when that particle finally wears down. #1 can be controlled most of the time by using the 'stop-squeal' stuff evryone else has mentioned.

and #3....Sometimes a change of pads (and rotors) is the only way to get rid of it. Some customers choose this option, but expensive.

PS. Last night I read an article in 'Motor Age' mag about the next generation of rotors...ceramic. Better stopping, way less heat, no noise. They're coming, but not likely for our cars.

$$$$ where does it let up ???

Any way...the article was saying that the ceramic rotors would be priced at about 2X what the iron ones cost. So I guess that wouldn't be too bad (I get stuff at our shop cost). What's cost of a carbon rotor ??

at the shop i work at we use the BG stop squeel or something like that, it's a black liquid that you spread on the pad, let it dry and install the pads...

There is a new Anti-Squeal Spray made by Gunk. You apply on the Friction surfaces such as the rotor. I plan on giving it a try my next break job. Here is a link
