I have a buick regal that I use for the winter time and american cars are all right but not nearly the same quality or finish compared to japanese. I have been in neons before and the only one you should even think of going fast in is the srt-4 or maybe an r/t. If it isn't one of those, then forget about speed.

Geoff: Neons share mitsubishi power and drive train IIRC.

Also, neons are reliable in the terms of the daily commute. They don't crash well, nor do they like it when you don't change timing belts.

All else aside, you're going to disgrace yourself in a Peon. Go out and buy a scooby for the winter.

agreed, Neons are like 7ms if one little thing goes wrong, you're down for a rebuild. Timing belts like to break/jump time for no apparent reason. But hey, we're not the ones that are gonna be driving the thing. Find something 5m powered for the winter, it will never let you down.

how long do you want to have it for? if the winter is all you're thinking..go for it.

if you want a long term daily beater, (zips up flame suit) go honda, they're reliable, cheap, good on gas, and plentiful at the junkyards etc...

don't get a neon.....please....

oh, mdc, the neon engine is a chrysler 420A(the dohc one) that mitsubishi uses in the eclipses. It is a chrysler engine though, not a mitsu. Some of the mitsu engines that chrysler uses are the 4G64 (2.4 liter SOHC and DOHC variants) 6G36(I think) that is the V6. I believe the neon SRT4 engine is a mitsu type engine.

I have a friend that has a 96 Neon with an auto and it sucks ass pretty much (95-96 Neons and Eclipses had quite a few issues with the motors and transmissions from what I've heard). But another friend of mine has a '04 Neon SRT that amazed the shit out of me. He made me take it for a drive and we got up to just over 150mph on a back road. If you are short on money though, I doubt you are looking at an SRT heh.

Good luck with the decision!

Its either the neon or a probe...

edit: neon has 100k miles timing belt replaced at 90k drives real nice engines clean.

I havent even test drove the probe

i own a 95 dohc 5-speed neon and id say stay away from them. the car is on motor #2 now, they seem to enjoy blowing headgaskets aswell. i hate the car everything in it is so poorly made. the door panels are held on with duct tape, so is one mirror. it needs outer and inner tierods on both passenger and driver sides so its pretty scary above 80 km/h. it just seems like any time you try to fix anything on that car, more things break, allong with what you justy fix. i vote honduh or late 80's 4runner for the winter.

i was thinking 4g63 swap myself but i dont know what is involved in swapping one into a neon. that would be a good laugh though and it is always a possibility. i just need to find more info on it. research on the neon was never a priority for me. :biglaugh:

i would assume its not a bolt on affair but it would be a fun and entertaining project if i had the funds to buy a 4g63 and make it work in a neon especially one as beat up as mine.
