moving on from the busted trans, I broke my driveshaft bearing. Replaced it and went out and broke the rear diff on a test drive... Doesn't my luck just suck. I think its the pinion bearings maybe. It makes a clicking noise with the car on stands turning the wheels by hand... like click click click click.
Going down the road it makes a clunk clunk clunk off power. When no noise on accel, no noise on decel... just noise at the neutral point maintaining speed. Also noise coasting with the clutch in. I can feel it in the shifter. I don't think its the trans. We did the old redneck trick with a wooden broom handle. Put the car back on stands, put it in gear, cranked it and let it go in 5th gear. The noise is definetly comming from the diff. You can hear it at the tailshaft of the trans too, but it is really quiet. Its loud at the back of the diff, and louder at the front of the diff. I think the noise is being transmitted through the driveshaft to the back of the trans.
Oh well.... I've been wanting to stick those 4:30 gears in for a while now to see what they do anyhow
I've had the whole carrier sitting in the shop for a while now, just waiting to bolt it in for a while. Should be fun to not have traction in third and fourth gears. At least until I get tired of it.
