i've got an 89 N/A, i'm 85% sure i have an open diff and was wondering if i could weld the diff instead of buying an LSD (maximize teh d0rif70). i got the idea from some of the local 240sx guys that do it, or would that be mistake?

what do you guys think?

(i'm on a very tight budget as well)

You can do it.
Ok, makes a shit load of noise.
Tires hop every wear
You tend to fish tale every wear(i did not call it drifting every wear, because the car does it for you)
When it's wet it sucks, when your driving normal and turning normal.
You need to take it to a good shop so they can do the wheel lock.
It's alot of stress on your diff.
To be honest, you will need to set up your suspension.
When i had mine it would understeer like a MOFO.
I got my weld lock for like 40 bucks.
i had it on my fc.
If your a mad type drifter with crazy mad skilz and have a shit load of money to be purchasing tires all the time, like i was. I hope you don't have a g/f she will complain like alot.

Oh, try to auto x or grip driving with it, if you can master that then your a mad type drivr(i know it's driver)

LOL, DEFINATELY not the right type of crowd to be asking....

I would search some drift forums or some 240sx forums for more info about it.

I personally say go for it. My good buddy has his welded(s13 240sx) and I've driven it. I can see how it would suck in many ways BUT if your serious about drifting it and can't spring for a LSD then it would help you out immensely...

Check this out, i had my weld lock for a year, buying new tires almost every month sucks. If you get your weld lock and they don't weld it right or for some stupid reason it brakes while your driving, what are you going to do>?
not safe.
I hate to say this but, "I know people that have 240's, i have gone to events with them and it's cool because you can just break you tires loose right away.
let me look for some stuff.

RX7's and 240's are a lot lighter so you can do it to those vechicles but the Supra is a boat compared to those. You will be putting a lot of stress on the rear end, and making turns will be difficult. You can find LSD's really cheap, find you a nice 4.10 and you'll be happy look in the for sale section I'm sure there's some in there now. :)

240's don't have enough torque to break things...

don't do it, even the 4x4 guys don't recommend it as it's a good way to snap axles...

I loved my welded NA diff for drifting. During the peak of the drifting season, I went through 1 stock LSD a month (clutch plates would just wear out quickly). The welded diff lasted about 4 months before it blew up, and cost much less than continually buying used lsds. I never had any problems in the rain (was living in Portland, OR at the time), but making slow tight turns in parking lots was annoying (lots of noise and lurching). I learned to give the car just enough gas to spin the inside tire -- that would calm down the noise/jerks but you could definitely tell which parking spot was mine...

For grip driving, it took some adjustment. Like others have said, it will cause some slight understeer so you would have to give the car gas throughout the turn. This made the entry speeds a little slower (but exit speeds slightly higher). You could compensate enough on a track day, but it would be too much to overcome on an autocross...

Of course, when you wear out an LSD, it just acts like an open diff so you can still get around. When you break a welded diff, you're calling a towtruck...

THANK YOU. that's exactly what i wanted to hear, someone who's been through the situation with a MA70.

so for drifting purposes, you would suggest welding the diff?
