I want to fab up a strut tower bar using mild steel, with adjustable rod ends.
I want to use mild steel, and will have to use threaded tube ends, that are chrome moly.
I want to know if the can be welded together? Can i use a mig welder, or do i need to have them tig welded?

You'll want to tig every thing together with er80s-d2. Er70s will work also, but won't be x ray quality.

If you mig it, you have a HIGH chance of actually crystalizing the chromium in the chrome molly. This is a NO NO! It makes the chrome molly brittle and prone to cracking.

On the other hand, you aren't welding a cage together so it will be "safe", but the mig welds will look like a metal sh!tn chicken has been running 'round.

:p

chromoly can be welded to mild steel, just base your welding rod on the stronger material like MDC said. It is also best to use TIG when dealing with CrMo. HTH

Hmmmmm. Given your expertice in welding & you the fact that you live next door to Boeing, I think I know where you work. :biglaugh:
