I was looking up some general information on drift settings of other cars and wondered if welding the diff on an MK3 would hurt me or benefit me over just buying the adjustable cusco LSD. Input?

I was thinking i'd get these opinions. if i did weld it eventually i'd be looking at a whole new rear end. Whereas if i just spend the 800 on the cusco now i've saved myself a bit a money i should think, atleast in the long run.

Weld it. Just do it.

Unless you have the money to spend, then get a 2-way.

But if you don't want to spend the money, just weld it. And make sure it's welded well or it could break.

And it's not that bad to drive on the street. If you know how to drive a car, it won't be any problem. I think that most of the people complaining or saying don't do it have never driven a car with a welded diff.

Oh and stock diff, even rebuilt, isn't worth it, at all. It sucks.

are you serious? dont weld it if its gona be street driven! it will kill your tires, and break loose even easier on corners. you would think it wouldnt do that, but since both tires are being forced to turn the same speed, and one over a longer radius, something has to give be it your tire breaking loose oversteering you off the road, or the weld breaks, or the axle breaks etc...
now for a track drifting machine it would be fine, it will help you break loose. just get an lsd in there do it properly

Driving a car with a welded differential is not bad at all. At any speed. Anyone who says otherwise has obviously not had much time driving a car with a welded differential. Not to mention those aftermarket "2-way" differentials are quite tight anyhow, meaning you will scrub your inside tire around tight corners even with the "proper" LSD. I know MANY people who have welded their differentials. It is an ok thing to do as long as it is welded good. I would say a "2-way" LSD is still a better option (though way more expensive).

I would just save and do it the correct way. In the end you will thank yourself. When you don't have a lot of moeny you start thinking differently. What would be the easiest way? The cheapest way?

Do it right, and you're rewarding yourself bud.

I think i will take my chances with the weld Idea. the lsd in the car is burnt up anyways. if the weld breaks or something i'll buy an lsd.

thats the thing its not just the weld that breaks. I daily drive a locker in my pickup, I got used to it, but I also drive it like a truck not like a sportscar. welded rear just plain is not a good idea, do it proper the first time and get an lsd or rebuild a worn one. sure you can get used to it, its not that bad when youre driving, but in parking lots or turning sharp slow corners it will hop, squeal and buck like a donkey!

We have 2 240sx shop cars. One has a welded diff, the other has a Kaaz 2 way. I would rather drive the one with the welded diff on the street. The Kaaz is tight enough that your always going to hope a tire, or chatter the diff. The welded diff sounds less obnoxious then the Kaaz, and both cars drive almost identical.

Weld it, but weld it good.

Its terrible for city driving and gets you into a lot of trouble just think your putting along normal speed and you goto an intercection where there is a cop on the opposit end just as your trying to turn nicely to avoid the attention your rear end start hopping & jumping up and down or you break traction and burn out right in front of him doing a simple tight turn dont do it.

It can be even a more deadlier situation, wet road tight mountain turn steap edge your wife is driving your car for the first time because you had to much to drink at a party
kids in the back and no one hears from the family in a couple days dont do it!!!

If your tracking racing it for the day or its a track only car its ok do it to a open diff dont waste a rebuildable LSD.

If you track & daily get an expensive new LSD, or switch out diffs between oem LSD & welded open & you will be fine!

The only 2 non factory LSD equipted car that I have enjoyed driving on the street are the Tomei T-Trax Advanced clutch and the Quaife Helical. Other clutch diffs are just too tight for the street and you might as well be driving a welded diff. Even the Nismo clutch LSD's are a little tight for the street

BTW, those are both 1500 dollar diffs

Welding a diff is a bad idea? go tell that to the 4 240's in my town that chirp tires all day long around corners... and one my friends doesnt really "chirp" it just slips and doesnt sound like your trying to do it.

if you dont care about the stock diff, then just weld it... you can always just go and get another one...

what about driving in the rain, do you ever do that? sneeze and you could be facing the wrong direction!
for a street car, its just not good. what exactly are you trying to accomplish?
