k... so there was a harness hack job which i had to repair and add on plugs and stuff
fixed it up... but may have had injectors on wrong firing order

but when cranking it acts like the timing is out

crank crank crank POOF and it blows back somewhere thru the intake manifold side... i think.... though the injector seals... not too sure
it's like it's leaking compression through that side of the motor somewhere

for it to go poof that would suggest messed up timing but belt is correct and so is dizzy
we got an auto sparky to have a quick look and he found that one of the ign feeds was missing so temporarily tapped them all together
also found no injector pulse
turns out ecu had crappy ground

regrounded ecu & now have injector pulse.... on some but not all
injector clicks are also very very quiet and seem maybe intermittent?

have stripped the harness again and repaired all injectors and now on correct firing order
will be trying it again in a couple of days but does anyone have any other suggestions as to what could be causing the backfire/poofs?

the car will crank all day and do the occasional poof
have tried engine start
manually opening flapper door
we have spark (admittedly not checked all cyl's)
fuel pump is working and fuel is circulating
plugs that we have pulled are wet with fuel
fuel pump runs about 9.5v on cranking

other than listening how can i check to see if the injectors are pulsing (don't have a pulse tester)

that's all i can think of writing for now :)

Sounds like the ignition timing is out of spec. May have something to do with the IGN lead missing. I do not know exactly what you did but to temp fix that issue but just "tapping" wires together does not sound very good.

as a temporary measure we have joined the ign feeds together so they now all have power
i will have a look at the dizzy again but i'm sure it's correct

this is a 1ggte so it has a distributor rather than a cps but same deal really

thanks for the suggestions

Ah, a distributor. Explains the problem even better. Sounds like you timed the distributor by putting the #1 cyl at TDC on the exhaust stroke, 180 degrees off. Make sure the #1 cyl is TDC on compression and then re-time the distributor.

hmmm nopes, i retimed it twice the other day, cams def at tdc and so was crank, the 1g dizzy's have the same marks as the cps, so i lined em up and put the bolt hole in the middle-ish, just like the cps and yea she's doin that

the 1g dizzy is annoying coz it doesn't just have one rotor arm it has two, as half the cyl's are on the inside and the other half are on the outside

sort like this.... ignore the numbers tho coz i can't remember the dizzy exactly right just now lol

Right, the crank can be at TDC when you time it and can be off. It's a common mistake. One question though is whether or not the car has ran before that you are aware off. What happened since then? Alot of times if you get a little water in the distributor that can cause problems like you are having as well and can take a couple days to dry out. If you washed that car recently I would take the cap off and blow compressed at it.

that's the big thing... no the car has not run for the past 2 owners... we swapped in another dizzy same result, but have not put in the wiring harness again and tried it since
once we have the wiring harness back in and triple checked the dizzy we'll see how she goes :)
actually i'll rephrase that... we'll see "if" it goes lol
