I have an NA '87 non ABS MKIII with worn transmission bearings. I have a spare W58 from an '82 MKII and heard that they have the same ratios and are basically the same unit, but the extension housings are different to move the shifter further back on the MKIII. Has anyone here done the swap between the two bodystyles with detailed knowledge to offer? Specific questions:
1) are the two the same length from bellhousing to output shaft tip?
2) is the spline count and output shaft diameters the same?
3) does the speedo gear interchange between the two?
4) do the shifter rods have to be exchanged within the extension housing?
5) someone that has actually done this and has tips or caveats to offer, please respond.
There are just many variables to cover and I'd like to go into this with as much info as possible. By the way, MKIII W58s are hard to come by around here, plus I know the actual mileage and condition of the MKII W58.
