W58 woes

Even though I'm running a GTE now, I'm still on the W58, so thought I'd put this here...

long story short, about 20 miles after breaking in my new Spec stage 3 clutch, my tranny started grinding and clanking...
so, we figured that one of the bolts on the clutch had backed out, so dropped it, only to find everything nice and tight.
so I'm figuring it is something being mildy broken inside the tranny.
funny thing is, it doesnt always grind, or make the bad noises, and the tranny works just fine... it will make noise in or out of gear, unless it is at a full stop, which again suggests the tranny itsself.

anyway, wondering, was it just time for the tranny to go?
I'm in the market for another, but would like to avoid this particular clanky-grinding experience next time around.
last piece of info is that with how poorly my engine is running right now, even with the turbo, I doubt I'm making too much more than the GE did.

Clifs: Tranny randomly started making grinding/clanking noises, still works fine. Can feel noises in accelerator/floorboards. Noise based only on car being in motion, not gear, gas, or clutch related.

wow, that's pretty long.
anyway, thanks for taking a gander.

It's not so much the ultimate HP it's the Tq/weight of the 7M/Mk3 combo that tears em up!

My 30 was making it's 9psi pretty well off idle that and a few blasts in the low gears = grumble grumble :(

Im now set on going with the R-154. But for the sake of knowing.

You think a completely gutted MKIII with aluminum driveshaft would still kill the W-58? Im thinking autocross and such, not drag runs.

Y13: Less weight is going to help and ACross isn't sustained high speed so the aluminium DS should be fine!

Can't really say though I guess it's going to depend on how much traction you get off slow corners!

I run a tall 5th and low Diff gears and this combination gives a high shaft speed when driving fast, single piece DS's have a lower critical speed than a 2 piece and can vibrate and whip as Uni Joints don't travel in circles but more like a figure 8.

For my application it's not something I'm willing to risk so will stay 2 piece.

Is it because the center bearing of the 2 piece DS keeps the centrifugal forces of the driveshaft in place?

The high rotating mass of a single driveshaft would cause it to expand or contract at high speeds?

BTW, Im not all that good at physics so if my questions sound stupid im sorry.

It's the actual length between the Uni's this allows the shaft to whip, this in turn hammers the Output bush in the trans to death and doesn't do the front pinion bearing in the diff any favours!

We have a few new cars on the market here that have long one piece DS's that are speed limited to 180 kph by the factory due to this issue.

I just don't get it guys. I would rather keep everything stock or oem. For the reason that racing parts are higher maintenance. Alluminum flywheel?? Alluminum d, shafts and all are only making your ride higher maintenance. I want my car to last another 10 years on top of it's already 15. Racse parts aren't your answer. Plus one of these days I a, going to want to sell it. And another supra enthuseist will appreciate a clean running ge, so they can do whatever they want to do to it.

Because we all like things that go fast, and deep down we all know that our favorite place is that one right below the intake manifold right at the bolt you can't quite reach without taking off the manifold. ;-)

for whoever made the "race parts" comment above, my fidanza aluminum flywheel has a steel friction plate, so it'll last plenty long. ;)
