I'm looking for the dimensions of the w58 - specifically:

Input shaft length (I think it is 7.00"?)
Length from face of transmission (where the bellhousing bolts on) to center of shifter
Length of bellhousing
Pilot bearing ID
Pilot Bearing OD

I've got a crazy idea, and am wondering how close a w58 matches it...

Input shaft = 160mm (6.3")
pilot bearing = 12mm ID and 32mm OD

The other two dinensions I dont have off hand, but I can get for you tomorrow when I am at the shop.

sorry that took me a few days, I just took some quick eyeballed dimensions assuming that you didn't need them 100% correct, but if you do,let me know and I can get you more accurate ones, but here is what I got

trans face to shifter center = 20 3/8"
bellhousing (engine side to trans face) = 6 9/16"

they are within a 1/16" accuracy

That's fine, I just want to get a rought estimate if I can squeeze a T56 in there... Looks like I can!

I can build an adapter plate to bolt the W58 bellhousing to the T56 transmission... I figure, if I'm going to need to get a new driveshaft anyway, I might as well get a custom one to hook the 6 speed up.

4.30 rear + T56's .50 6th = freeway cruising with mpg++

I think it'd be good.

Now I just need to find a 9.5" x 26spline clutch plate... oh, wait, what do you know? I have one sitting here! ;)

*EDIT*

Actually, I just measured it - it's 9 11/16"... hmm.. I hope that'll fit under the pressure plate.

Now I need to figure out how long the input shaft is on the LS1 and the LT1 T56s, see which I need to use, and figure out what to do about the pilot bearing.

Plan is to use the W58 hydraulics + bellhousing + clutch fork, W58 pressure plate, my own 26 spline (so it'll go over the input shaft of the T56) 9 11/16" diameter pressure plate (to fit under the W58 pressure plate)

Need to figure out how thick the adapter plate needs to be (depends on the input shaft length differences) and the pilot bearing.

Crossmember will be made after the tranny is bolted up, working ,and in... Driveshaft will be made later (aluminum 1 piece, of course)

So what is the input shaft length of the W58? 6.0"... the r154 is about 6.75" long... hmm... Ok, so the T56 LT1 is about 6.5-7" long... that's fine - 1/2" or 5/8" adapter plate, and we're ready to rock and roll!

Now to get some pilot bearing dimensions ;)

Arg... W58 = 201CC pilot bearing (BCA number) - T56 = 57080... I'll have to go by the auto parts store tomorrow, through the catalog, and look up the inner and outer diameters of both bearings :)

Why would you have to move the seats? The r154 looks to be wider than the T56...

The T56 trans face to shifter center is ~21.1"
The W58 trans face to shifter center is ~20.375"

So I'm looking at about 1.225" further back, with the 1/2" adapter plate.

Why would I be moving the seats?

I come from a land down under
From memory the T56 back at the extension housing was 220mm wide and the Mk3 trans tunnel is 210mm. (number may not be exact but it was something like that)

To get room you'd have to offset the stock seats or by some narrower.

Either way you'd need to chop the tunnel out and graft in a new one of fab one from sheet metal.

Use the interchange catalog at consbrgs.com for bearing dimensions, it's super handy.

EDIT: of course I can't find either of those beaaring numbers in there :nono: but I'll leave it for reference since I already posted it.
