Not too many people have done a vvti swap into a Supra because of the extra complication in the harness and the fact that the vvti has a more limited aftermarket.

maybe I'm the only one that found this funny, but you've got one person telling you it's difficult and another telling you to consult Satan...lol

to me, this is funny...

*I know there's someone on the board named satan, it just sounded funny.

sorry....back to your regularly scheduled post.

PPl make deals with me all the time!! :evil5:

Nothing's impossible ;-)

Basically, both engines are the same and contrary to popular belief, there are a few high HP VVTis running around. The two I'm aware of are at over 600 and 900 HP each. There are alot of aftermarket options and tuners have finally figured out how to dabble with VVTi, using some common aftermarket/standalone ECUs (that support wasted spark technology). Jason, at JPI in DFW has done so as well with an AEM, I think. The stock ECU easily handles up to about 600HP.

Now, for the good stuff....

Who cares? Really... not alot of ppl that have swapped any J series engines into an MKIII have exceeded 500HP. The VVTi looks Fing pretty in the MKIII engine bay and I'd love to do it again sometime. I've had the wiring diagrams translated and had fun with it for a few weeks (before I went single and somehow ended up with water in the oil)....could've happened with any non-VVTi engine tho.

Anyways, nothing to fear with the swap as it's just another 2J, but I believe that the VVTi has alot of benefits in performance and gas mileage (fuel management). I'm strictly speaking of it as a daily driver, under 500HP tho. I actually put a SMALL turbo on it when I went single to (get this) INTENTIONALLY stay at less than 400HP.

Only gotcha I can think of is that in some of the Supras/Aristos, the ECU had a built-in transponder and if you don't have the ignition key and electronics from the clip, you won't be able to use the ECU at all and will have to go standalone.

Hope it helps... after all that mess I went back to stock 7M and it's just not the same. I will begin another 2J swap next week, but I got a whole clip and it's not VVTi.

Anyways... here's a short vid of when it was first fired up.
