Voltage on Walbro

When installing the fuel pump, do you have to go full 12v ?

I've heard yes and no.
I've heard that the walbro will work at 9v (or w/e it is on our cars before it switches to 12v) but it doesnt like to.
The 12v mod is probably the easiest mod I've ever done on my car and I dont see the reason for not doing it.
