no, this is not a vid, its a question.

I've got a sony digital 8 handicam, and I'm doing USB streaming to the comp. With a 30 second drag racing clip, I'm getting a 500 mb file no matter what quality I end up using. What do I need to do to get these file sizes down. I'm coming out with AVI files, I'd like them to be mpegs...

I do colossal video work with half the computing power of that, and I'm not slowed down.

Are you using some sort of video card breakout box to convert RCA to USB ?

Do you have the codecs installed? I did plenty of Sony MiniDV->PC encoding on an AMD 2100+. Even made a DVD and played around with MovieMaker2(which works nicely for minor editing and making quick clips from a large vid.
Go to http://www.doom9.org and poke around. They have all the codecs you need PLUS many tutorials. They mainly deal with DVD ripping type stuff, but it's still usefull for editing.

no brent, the digital 8 cam has a usb output.
Then capture straight into the window's video software... do parts at a time, and when you drag them into the time line they won't be so huge.

And make sure to delete the AVI's that they create once you've captured.
